My original hood lighting was dim as well. It was a single 912 filament bulb. I bought two more 912 bases, spliced them to the original base, and with 3 LED's the area gets plenty of light.

Decided to keep all the lighting in the original light chamber which gets shielding from the airflow. So really cannot comment on how well the LED lighting stands-up to cooking grease as my solution does not get much exposure to it.

Thanks Jay, that's an alternative I hadn't considered.

For 'white' lights, look for the light 'color' as measured in kelvin.
- ~3K (3,000) is closer to a standard (not halogen) 12v filament bulb and 25W - 60W incandescent 120v bulbs.
- 5K is a nice sharp white.
- 6K starts to introduce blue and women tend not to like it.
- Descriptions of 'warm', 'cool', 'bright' are rather subjective.
Very informative! Thanks for posting. I am taking a lighting class and you are spot on with the things they are teaching.
Another thing that some might find of interest is that the higher the K temperature, the more it is going to mess with your sleep. The blue/white lights are what a lot of people are upset with. I am looking for the warmer temp lights for my trailer, 3k or as close as i can get.

They are extremely bright compared to the incandescent lights, almost like the light above a dentist chair. I know they have a warm white option also. I boondock quite a bit so these were a great option to help reduce amp consumption.
How have these bulbs held up? I was looking at the same design on Superbright but they wanted $10 a bulb. Could save $60 getting 10 of the ones you bought. Kind of a nobrainer if they are holding up.

Are the expensive bulbs any better than the cheap ones? I didn't buy supercheap bulbs but they weren't the most expensive either. Unfortunately, the ones I used to replace the halogen bulbs cause interference with the radio. I get zero radio reception when those lights are on. I don't recall if it is AM or FM that has the problem.

My two go-to sources for LED's are:
- vleds.com This company tends to run on the expensive side and I still go to them as quality and customer service are great. Sure, there are defects on occasion, but the service makes up for it.

- JDM ASTAR on Amazon. Price is reasonable and so far the quality is high with only a very few items going bad.

I have vleds and JDMAstar LED's through out the vehicles and RV, so they get abuse and are still working well.

If the LED is for a 1157 / 3157 installation, I highly recommend vleds as their products make for a very distinct difference in the 'dim' and 'bright' modes. I tried cheaper alternatives, but they presented very little difference between the two modes and had a high failure rate. So, should have paid for quality in the first place . . .

So far, I have only run into RF interference with a set of red LED's in the car. Have ~3000K's from JDM ASTAR through out the RV, a couple of 5000K's in the galley, and zero issues with radio reception.

These were special bulbs, not normal 1157 bulbs. Fortunately, I can get by without them on most of the time.

Thanks for the tip on VLED. If I decide to replace these LED bulbs I'll take a look at VLED.
