I may be wrong but that's how I remember it and I'm sticking with it.
The '82 F150 Explorer I had came out of the factory with a feedback carb and computer control. It sat on a used car lot forever 'cause some bright guy took the feedback carb off and literally threw it away. (I talked with him and he admitted it.) The computer put it in limp-home mode and it ran horribly. No one would buy it. I pulled the computer, distributor with no vacuum advance, and brown-grommet DS module, plus a whole lot of extraneous wiring. Then I installed a blue-grommet DS-II ignition. Ran great.

The truck was made in KC, as indicated on the Certification Label below, and sold in my home town in Kansas, Toto. My brother knew the people that bought it new - in Arkansas City, Kansas. In fact, I sold it to a guy that lives there and it is still running around there. Perhaps I could get a pic of the vacuum label under the hood to help you if you disbelieve.

Oh, and the "53" for DSO decodes to having been ordered from the Kansas City district - as described here: DSO Codes - ???Gary's Garagemahal. So, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a California emission truck, but it certainly had a computer, feedback carb, etc.

Yes, Gary, we all know this. But is your sample size fully representative of the whole?

Maybe I should have said they "could have" come with a DS2.

In any event, my experience is exactly opposite from yours, I haven't seen computerized stuff until 1984. Yes, I know it exists, I just haven't seen it myself.

It is representative for my sample. Here's my sample:
  • Rusty: 1981 351M and no computer
  • Dad's: 1981 351M and no computer
  • 1982 Explorer w/351W and computer, as explained above
  • Brownie: 1982 351W w/a computer.
  • Blue: 1985 351HO and no computer
I've owned these trucks in the last 7 years, so they are fresh on my memory. I mentioned the Explorer because one instance proves that they made a 49-states emissions computer-controlled system in 1982. And, since I'm the one that removed the system I know it was there. Plus, I know the history of the truck as it was purchased by someone my family knows. And I had the certification label pic handy. So, it was ordered in Kansas, built in Kansas, and bought in Kansas - obviously not for California.

I didn't mention Brownie as I don't know the history of the truck. I bought it with the points-style distributor having replaced the computer-controlled dizzy, although the original one was laying in the floor. But the computer was still under the driver's seat and all of the wiring was in place. So I know it had the computer-controlled ignition and feedback carb originally. What I don't know is where it was made nor what emissions package it had on it. However, I probably have pics of the certification label somewhere, and may still have the filler panel with the vacuum label as I parted the truck out. (As I think about it, I probably sent it to the body shop and it has been painted for use on Dad's truck.)

Anyway, the evidence is that computer-controlled trucks did exist with 49-states emissions starting in 1982.

UPDATE

So I went to take a look at the truck yesterday and everything checked out. It's the 351w 2bbl. He was asking $6000 and we agreed on $4300. I feel I got a pretty good deal. The truck is rust free and the older gentlemen I bought it from was the original owner. Thank you guys for in the input!!!! Ive owned a bricknose, and a dentside, however this is my first bullnose!

[QUOTE=WhatsAChevy?;16339787][QUOTE=460jared96;16339564]

: "You guys can spare me the whole "these trucks are like trying to push a brick through the air" speech"
Is that a Canadian thing? I don't recall anyone even referring to such a reference. Is that pre-emptive arrogance ? FTE is only here to assist, on their own time, and that should be appreciated, not disrespected.
I've gone through quite a few threads about people asking how to get more power of their engine and that reference had been said word for word a couple times. I'm not disrespecting, just letting you guys know I'm familiar with these trucks and I'm well aware of the fact that aerodynamics aren't one of their strong suits hahahah

We understand that . It's one of those 'typed vs spoken' moments.

My '86 F250 with a 351 4bbl had the horrific E5AE heads and it even has small exhaust. I got an 89 temporary motor and it has the E7 heads and way bigger exhaust mani openings and almost 100HP more at 230. The other one was about 140, huge difference.

I didn't click on the link to look at the truck in question, but it has a computer if it came stock and still has the " Variable Venturi Carb" on it. Basically an electronic carb that allowed to have cruise control. My truck is an 83 and it had one. The computer is under the carpet under the drivers seat. I have the 351w/C6 now with an 4bbl 600 edelbrock carb and intake, stock manifolds but true duals, no cats, and it may have a cam, not sure but sounds like it may, but the power is still nothing to get excited about. Stock these motors cranked out only 150 HP. Swap the heads out if you looking to gain anything real out of them.
