Steering Guru's step inside: 1/2 ton 4x4 Q's...

I recently ordered a new Moog DS917 drag link for my Bronco.

Upon receipt and inspection of the part, I noticed that the "accessory kit" seemed to be missing a few pieces...way to go Moog.

I'm missing...

x1 Castle nut
x1 cotter pin
x1 grease zerk fitting
x2 "washers or dust seals"

I can find the castle nut/cotter pin/grease zerk easily enough, but not those "washers/dust seals".

I called and spoke with Moog's "tech line" and asked if I could get a new accessory parts kit sent out....or...buy one. NOPE was the answer...WTF? Thanks a lot Moog.

My questions, what are those "washers/dust seals", are they 100% necessary for installation?

When I look at the drag link that's currently on my truck, all I can see is what appears to
be a grease boot installed between the drag link and the R hand tie rod end.

I'm sure that there's a reason those washers/seals are supposed to be included in the parts kit, but returning this drag link is going to be a major PITA to deal with.

Does anyone have a parts/installation diagram to show how the drag link/right side tie rod end should go together...correctly? My Ford shop manual has a really poor diagram.

Thanks for the help.

ETA: pics of how my existing drag link is mounted.

I don't remember a washer when I put mine together, and can't see one in the pictures I took. You need to have the dust cover to prevent grit from getting in the socket and eating the joint prematurely. You can get dust covers from the aftermarket, like Energy Suspension. Castle nuts you can get from your local hardware store and cotter pins as well.

No washer needed. I have no idea what those "dust seals" are. You need the dust cover or rubber boots, castle nuts, cotter pins, and zerks. That's all.

I just went back out to the shop and took pictures of my Bronc, and it verifies what I figured. Hope this helps.

Draglink shown as 3304 in pic (I know Mike also posted the pic, but it's easier when it's in this thread).

The parts marked #3332 were furnished with the 3280 rod or by themselves.

Try Bronco Graveyard.

D8TZ-3304-A .. Draglink same: 1978/79: Bronco & F150 4WD except Super Cab.

UPDATE

So, after more research here's what I found. Yes those parts are needed.

The parts I'm missing are a cupped metal washer and a rubber spacer.
The cupped washer keeps the grease in the joint, the rubber spacer keeps it tight.

Here's some pics of how that end of the drag link connects to the tie rod..

3332 applications: U = Bronco.

These parts were also used on various years of F100/250 4WD

C7TZ-3332-A is rubber.

D8TZ-3332-A replaced D7TZ-3332-A .. also 1977/79 F150 4WD

Mike or I may be able to find these parts NOS .. but I would think that Bronco Graveyard would have them.

Bill, so if I've interpreted your last chart correctly, would these be the parts I need?

Part #'s D5UZ-3332-A & D5UZ-3332-B

If you look at the application chart I posted, you will see (1) D5UZ-3332-A for 1973/79 Bronco.

It was also used on 1973/78 F100/250 4WD with M/S; 1973/79 F100/150 4WD with P/S & 1975/79 E100/350 (Econoline).

D5UZ-3332-B is not listed for Bronco's because it's for 1975/79 E100/350 only.

U as the 3rd digit in the part numbers prefix: Econoline / U in parts catalog applications: Bronco.

1966/79 Bronco parts are listed the 1965/72 & 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs.

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to break it down for me.

Happy ending time...

For those following along, here's the conclusion.

I was able to track down the missing parts @ Tom's Bronco Parts in
Medford, OR. These guys/gals are top notch.

I got lucky and talked with a squared away tech and he hooked me up with an accessory parts kit for a '66-77 Bronco drag link.

I received the parts today and they fit perfectly, my cost on this was under $20...$9.95 for the parts kit, S&H $9.00.

I've contacted rockauto.com about finding the missing parts and they are going to refund 100% of my purchase price of the parts kit.

Pics....cuz we all love pics...
