Question about hand throttle on dash

I have a question about the hand throttle on my 55 F350. How far does your throttle pull out? I can pull mine out only an inch and a half. And it doesn't seem to increase the engine speed very much. It is attached to the right side of the carb near the bottom.

Thanks.

The one on my 52 doesn't move much either but, it does rev it up. Maybe the inner part is broken or the outer housing isn't clamped.

Make sure the linkage on the carb move freely with the cable disconnected. Does the cable move inside the housing with it disconnected?

I pulled mine out, slid it apart then cleaned and lubed it. Works much smoother.

Hope you get it fixed.

I'm not trying to be a smart alec, but that sounds more like a choke?

My throttle pulls out about the same, but I think I could blow up the engine with it.

As I remember the hand throttle on all of these old trucks, they would give WOT or nearly WOT when pulled out all the way if rigged correctly. The hand throttle was used to bring engine speed up to run hydraulic pumps, fluid pumps, winches, anythig that a PTO could run. It could also serve as a very basic cruise control on level roads. I have seen it used on long mountain grades where the truck was down in the gears where no more downshifting was going to be required to maintain progress up the mountains. It was not uncommon at this point for a driver to open the door and stand on the running board while steering the truck. Remember, speeds were slow, the cab was hot.
Edit: Hand throttle on M. G. would get WOT.

The throttle cable connection is on the left side of the carb.... it was late last night.

the cable is free and moves easily. The **** comes out about as far as a choke. It seems as if the throttle thing at the bottom of the carb on the left side does not move very far. When I hooked the cable up again it pulled out about the same distance as before.

I stumbled across this picture of the throttle as attached to M.G. The hand throttle worked fine so it must have been rigged correctly or nearly so. HTH.

Thanks for the pic Ray. That is what mine looks like. When I disconnected the cable the throttle **** pulled out as far as a Choke does. When I hooked it up it only pulled out about 3/4 of an inch. It does not make any noticeable increase in engines rev.

Look down into the carb(not running) and see if the throttle plates open when you move the cable/arm.
