what is considered mileage too high to buy
i'm shopping for a Ford Truck between the years 2004 and 2008. I only need it for weekends now and then and for a couple months of winter. probably 5000 kms (3000 miles) per year. I don't want to spend much money so all I can find are trucks that have 280,000 - 350,000 kms but the interior and exterior are in excellent shape so I hate to pass up on these beautiful, fully loaded trucks.
My 2001 rusted away to nothing but the engine has been bullet proof, not a dime in 160,000 kms (100,000 miles)
price difference between low mileage and high mileage is $5000 - $10,000
questions:
1. will these engines go to 350-400,000 kms (200-250,000 miles)
2. besides engine and transmission, what else would you be worried about that isn't regular wear and tear like steering and suspension, brakes
3. does anyone know what a replacement engine would cost?
4. I still have the 2001 parked out back, will the 5.4 slip right into the newer 2006 truck?
I'm looking at buying a 2006 with 280,000 kms for $5000. it's mint inside with black leather, exterior has 0 rust and no dents but you can tell it's 10 years old by looking at the paint. it's an FX4 Off Road (what ever that means) I can't tell the difference between all the different trims. bigger wheels? lift? I hear talk of a leveling kit?
what are they selling for across the border?
any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.....Mike

like anything else. some of these 3 valve engines went for a lot of miles and others didn't. FX4 basically has skid plates, better shocks bit bigger tires..lower gears. the early trucks had the 2 piece spark plugs, and those can be expensive to change. the cam phasers can be troublesome. and the VCT solenoids can be noisy too. I think the late 07 and 08s have all the upgraded parts and one piece spark plugs..... read on this section for the common problems...... I know the 3 valve has more power than the older 2 valve 5.4s. and the older engine basically will not fit the newer trucks.
