Diesel Magazines were a disappointment
I did not renew. I had subscriptions to Diesel World, Diesel Tech, and Diesel (Power?) with big hopes and aspirations about learning
lots of stuff about diesels. Diesel Tech had some good teardown/rebuild segments and a section by a guy named Levi that were intro type informational primers on different motors and stuff. I would love to be able to attend the school where he teaches....maybe when I retire I can do it for fun. Back to the magazines... it seemed like all they wanted to focus on was having two thousand HP and the diesel events competitions. Then the spotlighted featured trucks which they claimed the owner drove around town were clearly deleted. The rest was all advertising for massive bling and lots of go fast parts ie gazillion gph multi turbo massive injectors etc same stuff every month.
To each his own I'm glad there are lots of folks into that. Me? I just wanted to learn some stuff about diesels. I guess they wouldn't sell any magazines if it was geared towards fuddy duddys like me with out $10,000 paint jobs.

Magazines, too many of them, are generally pretty much content-free these days. It's pathetic. I noticed a lot of articles, what most people over 30 would consider the opening introductory paragraphs are actually the entire piece. You kiddin' me? Starts out OK like they went to lunch or something but then they never came back. Print it anyway. Smokey Yunick is longtime gone.
I canceled all that schitt. Nobody can hardly write anymore anyway, they fired all the editors, and hey you kids get off my lawn! /s

diesel magazines are all about "how to roll coal" with your cummings powered dodge turd these days.
because everyone knows trucks covered with big "C" stickers, 24 inch lifts, and 18 inch stacks out of the bed that shut down intersections with black smoke are just super kool and the stickers, lift, and stacks make 5000 HP.

It's because dependable isn't sexy and functional isn't fun. It's why movies are made with James Bond as an international spy, not a 6am-8pm grind-it-out 6-day-a-week Joe rushing to get home before the kids are in bed and to catch the last two innings of the Rangers game on TV before doing it all again.
There's also the question of hobby-specialization. I work on my cars and do some fun things to the truck, but I also hunt and do a few other things that are what I really consider my "fun" hobbies. I'd rather buy a new shotgun than a new FASS system, I'd rather drop $50 on a day at the archery range or sporting clays than saving it towards new injectors. I'd rather not stud my truck until there's a reason to because as much as I enjoy working on it, that's a lot of stress I don't want. The guys in those magazines would pick their trucks over everything else I'd choose, that's their hobby.

Unfortunately most media, both printed and on the TV, are geared towards the lowest common denominator. There are hardly any technical articles in most of the diesel magazines and half the time when they do have the tech stuff it is pretty incomplete. IMHO forums are a much better resource.
