79 bronco cam shaft

i need some advise about getting a mild camshaft for my 79 bronco with 400m. i have $200 i daily drive it and race it in the mud bogs. so i need low end torque with ok fuel mileage. i need more for the powe side of things but cant go broke driving it on the streets. runs on 89 pump gas.

What cam is in it now?

Tires size and gear ratios?

There is never a cam that fits all and people tend to go too big and losing torque where they are always driving.

In my 76 Bronco, I have a 408W with aftermarket AFR 185 heads and a Weiand Stealth intake and I run a Comp Cams Extreme Energy 262 cam with 218/224 advertised duration with 4:11s and 35s. There is a little bit of hesitation in the low RPMS and peak torque is in the 3500-4000 rpm range. I think you are making a good choice of duration with the cam you are looking at.

Unless you have upgraded intake and exhaust I would forego a cam swap.

$200 won't go far when you start buying a cam, lifters, valve springs to match the cam, timing set, gasket set, oil, filter, etc.

Installing an early "straight up" timing set will give you the best bang for your money.

Good luck.
