Yes, we all know that there are certain nuances about given engines that prove to be the Achilles' Heel of that particular engine.
The fact remains that the vast, vast majority of trucks with the 7.3 IDI engine will reach the end of their useful service life for any one of a number of reasons before the succumb to cavitation issues.
Not saying that the 7.3 IDI doesn't have its share of problems, but the cavitation issue tends to be overblown.

I believe that the pressure plate diaphragm spring can become work hardened after a certain number of cycles. Everything has a life cycle fatigue. Doesn't mean the clutch is no good; if its not slipping, I wouldn't worry about it.
Didn't these trucks have an issue with the firewall area cracking? Perhaps the extra pedal pressure could make that more of an issue? Maybe I am talking out of my @#$.
As for the IDI, my only experience with one was a 6.9 that was worked hard (loaded to 25K GVW+) and ran well to 470K. Then it ran to 505K. My only experience with a 53 block Cummins is the one my friend has with 230K and no issues. Always a cold weather truck too. The internet (and people with no first hand experience) sensationalize vehicle issues. From a statistics point of view, people are way more likely to complain about a faulty product than praise a good one.
