Sounds like the timing is way out. Was the IP just replaced?

Timing isnt set correctly would be my guess. Could even be a few teeth off depending on how they did it.

a regular miss every time is not a timing problem may be injector or cam lobe or other cause of low compression at slow rpm a compression test is the only way to rule out mechanical cause.

Doesnt sound like a regular miss from what he described, sounds like the pump is off a tooth or two or 180 out.

Also, at extreme retardation levels, one slightly weaker injector can easily become a miss. And our injectors tend to be all over the place with regard to pop pressure, enough to matter when at these extremes. So you can easily have a horribly smokey engine that *also* has a miss due to just timing.

What does the gray smoke smell like?

Have you pulled the downpipe and looked inside? (oily?)

Does the tailpipe have an oily residue or drip? (bad turbo seal or CDR)

Run it with the oil cap off at idle...does it smoke out of the crankcase? (CDR issues)
