6.5 Detroit into a 96 f150
Alright, I'm new to this and posted a question in the category of "general diesel discussion," however this is where it needs to be.
I'm getting a 6.5 Detroit engine from my dad just to mess around with. I've always want to put a 4bt cummins in my 96 f150 but don't have enough money to buy the engine. I've heard it's possible to put this engine in my pickup but don't know how difficult it would be, or how costly. I would simply like a good solid yes or no on the possibility of this fitting, and if yes, a general parts list and some "instructions" on how to do it.

I responded to your other thread.
YES, it is possible to install the 6.5 engine in that truck.
Difficulty: On the 1 to 10 scale, probably a 7.5.
Costly: Yes. You will have to bring a transmission along with it, and re-do almost everything the engine touches.
Parts list: You will be making this up as you go, as you fit and refit and find what's available that fits in the truck. Radiator for example--you may be able to use a Ford radiator from a truck with a larger gas motor. Engine mounts--you will have to make them yourself.
Instructions: Take out the old motor, put in the new one. You will have to fill in the blanks as you go, fit and refit etc.
Sorry.
If you must do something like this, at least make it fast, like so:

Anyway. So you think it would be easier to bring a GM transmission with it? My dad said it would be easier to just slide the Ford transmission back and put a conversion kit in between. What transmission would you suggest?

And there is a 351 in it now. And its a 95 model 6.5 from a Chevy 3500 dually. I'm not sure of anything else about it. My dad already told me I would have to convert the cooling system to high flow. And get better heads. And better pistons. And a better turbo. And more on the reason part, I'm a fan of the 6.5. There are problems but they are fixable.

I know you have two threads going here, but:
Bring the GM trans with the motor. I forget and am too lazy to look--auto or stick? Either way, the adapters are pretty expensive, especially for automatics--think $800+ in some cases.
Gee whiz, if you are going to have to rebuild that 6.5--pistons, heads, turbo---boy, your budget better be Pentagon sized.
Your '96 351W could be the basis for a real powerhouse without all the other changes. 393 or 408 motors can be made, with 400 HP in reach. Of course they will be gas hogs, but you can buy a lot of gas for the cost of the 6.5 project.
Good luck with it.

IF that sub is in good condition, and double IF IF it's 4wd, that 6.5 with a turned up turbo etc belongs there.
I drove my b-i-l's sub a few years back--I was surprised how nice that thing drove, being such a whale of a rig.
Plus, GM to GM, almost everything comes in a factory box and can be had over the counter if need be or when replacement time comes. Try that with a GM/Ford/welded up combo part.
I read your other thread and I think you are on or very near the right track.
Good luck with it!
