6.5 Detroit into a 96 f150

I am new to this site. I am pretty well new to forums in general, but I am desperate for some help.

This upcoming few weeks my dad is going to be getting a 95 Chevrolet dually with a 6.5 Detroit in it. The guy that owned it before put a newer engine in it from a wrecked truck. My dad is planning on giving me the swapped out 6.5. I've always wanted to put a 4bt in my f150 but this is the perfect opportunity for something bigger.

If someone could help me get some parts lists together and some "instructions" for the swap, that would be fantastic. I'm planning on starting around April and attempting to finish be August.

Why?

Judging by the list of issues 6.5ls exhibit on wikipedia...I would almost classify them as the gm version of the 6.0L

Because I have the engine already, I'm on a budget, and I want to.

And I also have a list of problems and solutions that I can fix while it's on a stand.

Not a good reason--already having the engine that is.

You will probably break any budget you set for this.

There are no "instructions" for this swap.

You are converting a gas to diesel, so you are looking at fuel, cooling, exhaust, engine mounts, cross members, oil pans, transmission, gauges,

Which version of the 6.5 do you have?

What's in the '96 now?

I will be thrown off the site for saying this, but there are some GM motors worth swapping into another make, but IMO this ain't one of them.

^what I was thinking!

As I recall most early gm diesels were considered under powered....

You forgot to mention Brakes, suspension, tires, drive train (drive shaft, u joints, rear end, axles). None of that in an f-150 was meant to handle that kind of power...

this site is for helping people that want help.
the guys so far have given you good advice, whether you want to use it or not is up to you .
to put that engine in a F-150 you are going to have to re engineer EVERYTHING.
and you will still have a truck with an at best problematic engine that you will not be able to get parts for if you break down on the side of the road, and no one will want to work on if you can not fix it yourself.

Swaps and budget generally don't belong in the same sentence. A B series Cummins swap can easily run from $5-$15k depending on a multitude of things. That even takes into account the massive amount of support that set up gets. If you do want to get an idea of what you are going to need check out destroked.com. He might be able to fab up a transmission plate adapter, flywheel etc if your keeping the ford trans. Of course if your keep the chevy trans then your going to need to work out the drive line issues (shafts, u-joints, transfer case etc) and make the Ford linkages and what not work with the chevy hardware. In addition to the fabrication work on the motor mounts, fuel lines etc etc.

I highly doubt you are going to find any instructions or how to's on swapping a 6.5 into a Ford. You are venturing into a bit of uncharted waters, good luck on the project.

The 4BT in your first post is the better idea, sell off the 6.5L and use the funds to buy the 4BT. Speaking from experience, the 6.5 Turbo Diesel GM used is a dead end.
