Transmission differences between the 4.6 and 5.4
So my 05 4x4 4.6l auto decided to break the yoke on the backside of the transfer case and drop my driveshaft while I was going about 73mph on the interstate... Needless to say I was hoping to just replace the driveshaft and yoke then call it good to go but once I got my truck in the shop it started leaking transmission fluid off of the crossmember. After some lengthy investigation I found a crack in my transmission's housing. So now I'm on the hunt for a used transmission and from what I've read online the 5.4 had a different more "heavy duty" trans behind it than what the 4.6 has. Is this true? I think it is a 4r75 instead of a 4r70 but I'm not exactly sure. Any insight would be great.

The 5.4s did have the 4R75E after 2004. They were basically an upgraded 4R70.
The biggest difference I found reading google was that your torque converter may be different than the 5.4, but I don't know for certain.
according to my Ford Transmission manual, The transmission designation was changed in 2004. Several improvements were made; front pump, turbine speed sensor, output shaft ring gear and planetary gear set. 4.6L engines got the 4R70E...... 5.4L engines got the 4R75E, the only difference being the planetary gear set is hardened on the 4R75E.
