Hey all, I am real new to expeditions and would like some help making a descision on which model/engine to get. What are your thoughts on the 4.6 vs the 5.4. I drove a 99 with a 4.6 the other day and it accelerated OK. Is one easier to modify than the other? Thanks in advance for the input.
I don't know about modifications but I bought the 5.4 after driving both. They get about the same gas milage but the 5.4 has a lot more ***** and I suspect will last longer because it doesn't have to work as hard to do the same job.
I have a 1999 XLT 4x4 with the 4.6 engine. If you drive on level roads and don't tow, you can get away with this engine. I live in a hilly area, and the 4.6 has to work hard to keep up with traffic. If I was in the market again, I would have gone for the 5.4, a $695 option back in 1999. Why?
1. The 5.4 has 20 more horsepower and about 45-50 more ft. lbs. of torque, handy when you are trying to push 5,500 lbs. of truck around.
2. With the 5.4 (at least in 1999) comes a heavier duty transmission (4R100 model)and rear axle, as compared to the 4.6 package.
3. Much (not all) of the performance equipment available for Expeditions is dedicated to the 5.4.
Considering you are looking at used vehicles, condition is as much an issue as equipment, so I wouldn't kick a 4.6 out of bed if it was in great shape and well-priced, but assuming condition and price were similar, 5.4.
