fuel gauge reads high...

Hi
I just read torstens post
. And I saw that the fuel gauge was changed 87 + on up.
I had to get my truck on the road so my son can have my explorer, anyways I was having trouble getting the larger hole sending unit for my 85 f250.
So I bought a small hole tank and a small hole sending unit.both from spectre.
but it always reads 2x as high as it should .
New connector and ground....

A few questions, 1) what size tank are you using? 2) can you verify that it is the right sending unit? I did the same thing on my truck and got the wrong sending unit, it was meant for a smaller tank, therefore not drawing gas from the bottom and not giving me the correct fuel gauge readings. Mine reads high at first then quickly drops down to E with a 1/4 of a tank left.

Hi
19 gal side tank.
I was down 1/8 and put in 10 gallons !
Actually I think it's probably an earlier tank cuz it only has a ground a positive and 1 tube out.
It's like a 3" hole

Yeah that's like what mine is, which sending unit do you have? First or second?

Huh... That's the right one, can you verify that the float is raising and falling properly? You can bend the arm of it to adjust it, if it needs adjusted

Yeah I figured I probably have to do that! Thanks for the info. I was kind of hoping to be a way around that.

Yep no problem make sure you bend it the right way! Bend it upwards like an L!

If the gauge is indicating 2x as high as it should, bending the arm up won't work. Neither will bending it down.

For example when the float arm is against the lower stop, the gauge should be on E. Bending the arm up would make it even less accurate than it is now.

Look for some method of adjusting the arm itself down relative to the "axle" of the sender. Repops from 60s and 70s era senders have a set screw on the arm attachment for this purpose. Took me about 5 years to figure that one out. Hope this helps.
