E4OD Rebuild? Or buy rebuilt?

E4OD Rebuild? Or buy rebuilt?
I am acquiring a truck from my dad, through a trade. The tranny has troubles. It is 1995 super/crew cab. One of those centurion conversions. Its 4x4. I am getting it for a toy. I'm gonna lift it, put some big feet on it. He tried to pull a tractor out of the mud with it! and smoked something in the tranny. I figure the TC? Anyway, he might have smoked something else, that's why he tried to pull a tractor out of the mud with a freakin truck! What is a good route for a rebuilt tranny? Or, should I just attempt the rebuild myself? I have rebuilt 1 tranny in my life, a torque flite. It worked. I'm leanin toward leaving the rebuild to the experts. Or, should I just fix the tranny that's in it? What would I look for to be the problem if so? It wont move in any gear? What would I check, to diagnose the problem? Any advice would be appreciated.

Where are you located?
If you're anywhere near Connecticut I know a guy that rebuilds these transmissions for cheap and does quality work.
Cost me $1250 for a rebuilt transmission. Upgraded torque convertor, clutches, shift kit, etc etc.
Normally in these trucks the torque convertor starts slipping and then it's game over.
If I didn't go through him I was starting to look towards custom built transmission that were significantly more expensive.

I'm sure he'd be more than willing to do it. I have 8k miles on mine in the past three weeks and she's shifting and pulling awesome. Took him a day to rebuild mine.
Shipping would probably be $250-300 each way which would put you in the $2,000 range for a rebuilt transmission which really isn't that bad.
Granted I'd try to find someone local and trusted to do it before shipping it but then again finding someone local that you trust is easier said than done.
If you want his number, I'll pm it to you and you can give him a call.

I could call around but I feel like there would be more options in the metroplex that would be more convenient for you

When my E4OD conks out I'm inclined to rebuild it myself. The problem, for me at least, is figuring out what parts to buy and what modifications to make. That's where the guys who specialize in them have a real advantage.
