Well my torque converter is going out along with the tranny. Just talked to our mechanic friend. He said he couldn't rebuild a E4OD at his house due to him not having a half ton tranny jack. He said im looking at $1100 to rebuild a tranny at a shop and he would do it at his shop where he works but he said I probally wouldn't want to pay for the shop labor. He says its about a 12 hour job. So my question here is would it be smart for me to attempt to rebuild it myself if I purchased a tranny jack? I am not a mechanic expert by any means, I've done some small things like installing headers, breaks, ect.
Is there any more special tools I would need? What is about the average cost if I purchased everything? Im guessing $150 for a rebuild kit, and $300 for a additonal Torque converter. That would run me about $450 and I saw tranny jacks going for $2-300. So all in all I would be looking at about $750. Is this worth it to do as a weekend project?
Yeah, I'd rebuild it myself and save the cash. Been down that road several times.
Though, if you are interested, a friend of mine from a different forum is seilling a 'well built' E4OD, trying to clean out his garage. It's out of a truck, though I don't remember the year.
PM me if you're intersted, I'll give you his email address. If not, thats cool too.
You are very low on the price of a rebuild kit. Try about 3-4 times that for a quality kit.
Convertor is about right though.
You should consider a shift kit too.
I just went to a Tranny shop today and they said mine needs to be rebuilt, for only 2200, to 2800. I have a 94 Bronco. A guy North of me said he has a 95 E4OD, used for $650. What do you guys think? Of course all of your help is very much appreciated
Take that $650.00 and apply it towards a quality rebuilt.
Used transmissions can be defective.
When I was active in the trade people would bring a used transmission to my shop to be installed.
No problem.
If it worked. Good.
Many many times it didn't, leaked, slipped.
They then had to pay me again for my time, plus fluid lost.
Some times you win, sometimes you lose.
If you can find a history on the transmission and does it come with a warranty.
