To sell or not, my 2006 6.0 Deisel?

I need some advice from you Ford Truck Experts.
Purchasing an F250 Crew Cab (XL 4x4 20" tires Off Road Kit 6.0 Deisel) in 2006 to pull my boat.
Due to health problems the boat went soon after the purchase but I still like driving the truck.
I don't drive far now, just 3k mi a year. The truck has 39,600 miles on it & needs tires & tune up.
So with a rough idle I took it to my auto shop (not a diesel specialist)
They called & said I was heading for major expenses & due to the past history of the 2006 6.0 diesel I may want to consider my options.
I usually change my oil & filters myself and have had no problems so far. The shop said there were 15 trouble codes and suggested that I
let them update the computer & run it for a few days to see what codes popped back up.

So for those with some experience in these matters I am faced with keeping the truck & fighting the maintenance battle $$$
Or trading it in for a new vehicle. Looks like $15k trade in value.
I like the truck so far & the interior is in very good condition. Exterior has a few very minor scratches but looks good.

I just don't know what a can of worms the 6.0 Diesel is.
Don't really need a truck but like driving it. Although I'm 67 I still have a little kid in me.

I paid 44,800 for it in 2006

I think people without a lot of specific experience with these engines hear a lot of talk about the 6.0 and believe it to be a pig of a mess. I don't really think that is so. Your rough idle when cold issue could be as simple as bad solder joints on your FICM, or some minor stiction in the injectors that could be fixed with a thinner synthetic oil and some Rev-X additive. It could also simply be a matter of needing the updated flash on the ECM, and FICM.

I would take it to a shop that has a history with Super Duties and Power Strokes. They can check the voltage output on the FICM and run a cut out test to see if you really have injector issues. Any dealer can also plug into your truck and tell you if there is any updated software available for it.

Thanks for the reply.
Update is they are charging me $160 for the software update
and total of $350 for diagnostic & update.
They are looking into the rough idle, which BTW happen when at running temp.
The only code I got was #3 glow plug (Advanced Auto did a scan a few moths ago)

They charged you $190 for diagnostics already and don't know what the problem is?
I hope they can tell you exactly what tests they ran that justify that labor time they are charging you for!

I wouldn't jump to assume you're opening a can of worms and ditch the truck. Don't get discouraged yet. Even a bad injector isn't that big of a deal.

If it were me I would make sure they told me how much diagnostic time they were charging me for and exactly what they did during that time.

Yea I haven't got the truck back yet, they are trying to fix the rough idle.
To be exact the idle at times surges, not really rough.
It hunts between 600 rpm & about 900.
Not all the time but fairly consistent after a good warm up. Not when cold that I can tell.

So the bill may be more when I get there. ):

Thanks

I would take the truck somewhere else. Where are you located?

Brandon Florida.

The shop foreman, local repair shop, was suppose to be the shop foreman for a local Ford Dealer and very knowledgeable on the diesel.
But I will look for another source of service.
With other cars & trucks I have owned my dealer experience has been less than satisfying. Can't say I'm happy today ether.

I would try a different dealer if you're having a bad experience with your local one. Or try asking here: Florida Chapter - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
