PCM?

Hi All,

I have a 2000 EB that I bought last year and have hardly driven. The reason is that 2 days after I brought it home the x-fer case started acting up. It was dead.

After letting it sit for a while while I calmed down I started working on it, but I still have 1 big issue.

OK, here are the original symptom:

1) x-fer case would only engage in Low Range. High range gave grinding sounds and no propulsion.
2) When in 4-low the speedometer reads 4x actual speed (approx)
3) Air compressor running lots.

The biggest problem that I still have is #2. Oh, and I can switch in and out of 4HI all day log with no problem, until I switch into 4LOW. After engaging 4LOW ( and disengaging it) I cannot switch out of 4HI. If I turn the ignition off and restart the Expy, it will go back to AUTO 4WH, but not until I switch it off. Here is what I have done:

1) Replaced the transfer case with a used one.
2) Left the shift motor and VSS on the "new" transfer case that came with it.
Converted the suspension (loving it!)
3) Tried replacing the GEM with a used one. No Change
4) Replaced the 4WD transfer relay module. No Change.

I am really at a loss. I like the ride in this truck, but I want to know what is causing my trouble. I use this truck for Scouts and need to know it is reliable.

Could it be the PCM?

Any Ideas? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What about the other speed sensor?

Then the problem could be with the speedometer itself.

Is it not normal that the speedometer reads 4x speed when in 4L? I never use mine, but does the speedometer compensate for the low gear?

The speedometer in low range should read the actual speed you are going.

Perhaps the speed sensor that came on the used transfer case is also bad. Just a thought.

I thought about the speed sensor being bad, but having the exact same symptom when no one seems to have heard of it? The odds seem way too high.

Also, I thought about the speedo, but then why only in low range?

It really has me baffled.

Put your HEC into test mode and compare the speedometer readout to the displayed value. See if they are consistent or no.

Pull the speed data from the PCM with a scan tool and see how it compares.

This will tell you where the 4x speed indication anomaly is coming from.
