my Son just purchased a 61 F100

my son just picked up a 61 F100!
paid for it all by himself!
but he called upon dad to tow it home for him.
he's 15 and eagerly wanting to work on it.

i do not like the front brakes. the drums pull th the right under hard braking conditions...
when i was a kid, i had to deal with this in some of my trucks,
id like to get this handled for him..

he's got 500 to spend for upgrades, and IMO brakes are numero uno!

has anyone used the speedway disc brake conversion?

straight 6 and a 4 speed runs great!

I have the Speedway disc brake kit installed on my 64 F100 and am very happy with it. The instruction leave a bit to be desired, but you will figure it out. Be sure to update the master cylinder as well, preferably with a power booster. Good luck with the build.

the kit is just brackets, rotors, and bearings, cant be that hard! unless a spindle is toast.

One thing to consider, is replacing the hard lines. 50+ year old lines, this should be done no matter what you decide. A double flaring tool and a roll of NiCopp, bends easy.

Here's another angle to consider versus throwing new chinesium parts at it. $500 would get an entirely new brake (stock) system on all four corners to include drums, wheel cylinders, hard lines, hoses, M/C etc, if you guys did the work.

At 15 it would be a better experience for him as far as learning maintenance and inspection. Everybody hates drum brakes because they are all completely worn out now, but they work just fine when setup right. Get him a 1961 Ford Truck Shop Manual a few weeks before starting the work. Here's a good webpage on basic brake service:

First nice job on the truck.
Don't be so quick to say that. He spent HIS money to buy it. I also guessing HE put time in to fix it up to where it is now all be it some help from dad, we do that some times

My son (27 now) did not get his license till 18 because of money. He never hurt any of my cars/trucks. The Jeep & subie he bought with his money, crashes were not his fault. Car pulled in front of him from behind a truck & T boned the car in the Jeep. A drunk ran a light and T boned him in the Subie. Jeep he still drives, Subie was totaled.

Point is he worked for want he has, they will take care of them the best they can because it was their money & work.

X2 what did he do for brakes? New drum system or kit for disc? I am with the other poster if drums are gone thru and brought back to like new they work good. My son learned to drive on a manual drum brake v8 small car, made a better driver of him.

What can I say of the garage walls! Now air brush that on the truck and see what the other kids say!
More picture of the truck when you can.

he is a good kid, and I hope he treats it with respect.

dad has helped a lot in this project, while building my own truck.

but it has been done on his dime.

the brakes were completely gone through.
front disc conversion, rear drums are all new besides the backing plate.
updated master and prop valve. all new lines.
im confident it will be a solid runner for many years to come.
tomorrow he will be starting to put it back together, ill take some pics of his progress.

Here it is.
my son is only here every other week, so progress is slow.
he was able to order a new window seal kit from vintage ford.
holy expensive! 430 bucks worth, but well worth it.

we still need to order some other items, but now he's finishing up the clean up on the grille, stepsides, and a few other random items so we can paint it black.

cant wait for him to start driving it and I don't have to take him to school!
