If the 56 with top chop doesn't have a windshield in it, consider it a parts only truck, or buy one of the other uncut cabs for it. Refitting a windshield into a chopped 56 is a near impossibility if the chop wasn't done around an already cut down glass.
Cabs or any other sheet metal won't have a title, the frame is the only titled part.

Don't guess anybody here went?
would love to hear what the COE sold for

AX, what do you mean cabs won't have a title. Here in OK we have to have a matching trifecta of VINs to get registered. Cab, chassis, and paper title numbers must all three match. Otherwise, you're looking at a rebody or other title process. This is one issue I have with my COE. PO ditched the frame and figured out how much hassle he had created for himself and opted to sell.

I think you answered your own question.

Exactly! Let me review serial #s and titles as they apply to our trucks. Until the standardized VIN # system was accepted/mandated by manufacturers and states (pushed by feds and insurance companies) when vehicle records became centralized, computerized and searchable, there was no standardized specific vehicle ID system. Each manufacturer was free to use whatever system they cared to. Same with state DMV, they could issue a "title" or just a registration that was renewed each year to verify ownership. Records were hand done, and not centrally archived or searchable.
Ford chose to use a serial number system that included coded basic info about the vehicle and ended with a unique sequential build number.
That number was stamped into the frame rail as the truck moved thru the assembly line. Ford chose not to stamp that number into any other part of the vehicle like some other OEMs (namely primarily GM that also stamped the body and engine with the same serial number, giving rise to the term "number matching". There is no such thing as a "number matching" FoMoCo offering!) Ford did attach a Rating Plate to the truck that for convenience included the serial # but was primarily intended to provide additional info such as load capacity, rear axle ratio, interior and exterior color, etc. This was not meant to be used for vehicle ID so it was typically screwed or riveted to the inside of the glove box door (in 56 to the driver's door post), where it was easily removed, changed or swapped to another vehicle. Therefore as the only permanently stamped part, the frame became the definition of the "legal" vehicle for proof of ownership. If you possessed a title or registration in your name that matched the # stamped into the frame, you owned the entire vehicle, including any and all parts attached to it. Hence cabs, fenders, bed, engine, transmission, seat etc etc, when separated from a frame are only misc. parts, and cannot be legally "owned" (titled) if not (or until) attached to a frame if/when they then become part of the vehicle specified by the stamped serial # in the frame.
