Any how to's or write up on changing a flexplate/dropping a 4x4 auto transmission?

I have a 00 SuperDuty 7.3 with a ZF6 Manual, I recently did my clutch, well now a buddy needs his flexplate done. Similar enough to a clutch, but different enough...

(He has a 97 F250 with a 4x4 in a 7.3) E4OD i presume? Not the 4R100 correct?

I was wonding if anyone has any write ups on doing this job? I grasp the main concept, but their is always those slight differences. Dont wanna screw something stupid up!!! Never dropped an auto before, my ZF6 was the first and only transmission ive ever pulled, and it went fairly well, im confident.... just not sure if theirs anything specific i need to know... and reinstallation... torque specs will come with the flexplate??

Anything is helpful! Thanks!

If you've done yours, then it'll be very similar to the OBS. Same bolt pattern. 3 on each side. The 2 on top are the hardest. Long extension and a swivel and you'll get it. Drop the t case (drain everything first), crossmember then the trans. Pretty straight forward. IIRC, torque specs are 88ft lbs. obviously a trans jack would help.

I couldn't get it to edit, I did a flexplate on an IDI turbo 7.3 by myself. So you and a buddy should have no problem with it.

the only real thing you must pay attention to is that the torque converter is fully seated into the pump in the trans before re installing the trans.
if the converter is not completely seated when stuffing the trans back in it will hit the flex plate while you bolt the trans up forcing the converter into the pump destroying the pump and housing.

Just got time to pull the E4OD, the flexplate is cracked in the normal way, right outside the bolts all the way around.

Whats a good replacement manufacturer/retailer & part number for one? I assume you dont want OEM from Ford unless they have upgraded it? Aftermarket is probably the best quality/price ratio way to go?

Found these 3 at Summit;
1997 FORD 7.3L/445 Flexplates - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

Hes thinking the Middle priced one..

If the photos are correct in the link, the highest priced one looks to be for an IDI engine, since it has 4 bolt holes for the torque converter. The flex plate for the 7.3 stroke and the 7.3 IDI engines will not enter change. I guess I'd go with the first one listed, since it says it's for the Powerstroke.

I have both the spacer and the ring from my 97 f-250 that originally had the e4od. I converted to zf-5 manual and no longer need them.

He actually found a deal getting a flex plate, spacer and stress ring for $40. We didnt use the flexplate and beings it was used and was worried of wear, so opted new for that. Got it all back in, and going.

Changed the tranny fluid and filter. It shifts from 1st to 2nd, and will wind out 2nd all nicely. We cannot get it to shift to 3rd or any highy gears. Which worked previously....

HE has my DP infinity to monitor any electrical and sensor things going on, were just not sure what to look for and what would be causing this. Does anyone have any ideas what to look at or check or watch.

What would stop this from shifting into 3rd and higher gears? Im not there to see it and help test, i can only relay suggestions and try to explain what to do....

Sounds like its in limp mode. I would look over the connections. Make sure a pin didn't get bent, or a wire cut.
