Automatic for 226 6 Cylinder

I am looking for some information on what automatic transmissions will bolt up to a 1950 226 flathead 6 with minimal modifications and expense. I have a 2 speed Ford-O-Matic out of a Falcon. The truck has a 4 speed crash box transmission, and I am looking for a cheap, more user friendly transmission so the rest of the family can get in it and drive. Hopefully someone has been down this road and can offer some advise.

You didn't say what model/series of truck you're working on. it will make a difference with the answers. No modern automatic transmission will bolt up to the 226 without an (expensive, if you can find one) adapter. Even if you found the one rare unit that would have come in a 1951 car with the 226 (one year only) it still wouldn't fit in the truck chassis without crossmember modifications.

The simplest swap would be with a syncro truck 3 speed in place of the crashbox.

226 Transmission

The truck is a 1950 F2 with a 4 speed crash box transmission. A 3 speed unit like you described sounds like a good option. Would this be a bolt-in? Any particular transmission to look for? Would it use the stock clutch? Any advice is appreciated.

Actually Ford never did install the Ford-O-Matic behind the 226. You had to wait to 1952 and the 215 valve in head engine to get an automatic behind a Ford six cylinder.

You could work with one of the companies offering C4 or AOD to flathead V8 kits. You need a six cylinder specific flex plate, then I think the rest of the kit would work with the truck bell housing.

As far as I known, from my research of available kits for my 8BA/AOD conversion, none of the kits will work with the 226. Nor do they offer any way to make it work.

Yes. The bell housing problem is solved by using the truck bell housing that replicates the 32-48 block. The starter is the same as used on the V8s so that is fine. It is the flex plate that noone makes for the flathead six. Here are two kits that would probably work except you get to figure out the flex plate:

I have a 1950 ford f-1 it has the flathead six 226 engine in it. I also has the three speed transmission. It's all original. The engine was rebuilt three years ago. I'm wanting to run it on the highway at a faster speed. I'm thinking the T-5 transmission but what all do I need to make the swap? Any help would be appreciated. Not sure what all I would need to do. Can I still use the original drive shaft and rear end? Thanks

Welcome!
A couple of comments:
The tranny change isn't the best move for speed, you should consider a rear end swap. Look here for guidance: 1948 through 1960 Ford F-1 and F-100 Rear Axle (differential) Swaps - Ford-Trucks.com

With higher speed, often comes a desire for better brakes, steering, seatbelts, and tires...

A proper welcome is in order, it is best to start a new thread and introduce yourself, your truck, and post a pic (or three) of your the '50.

Are the 226 and Flathead bolt patterns the same with just a different input shaft length?
