Where to get an alternator that is worth a darn?

My 30-something year old alternator finally went out this week, so I went down to the parts store to get a replacement. Long story short, I had to visit 2 parts stores and try 3 different alternators before finding one that actually worked. The current one charges "ok" but makes so much electrical noise that it interferes with the radio unless I am listening to the strongest stations.
Obviously quality control is no longer a concern with the big name store reman parts..
So, who rebuilds or manufactures a good 65 amp ford alternator?
I'm really not interested in a 3g swap, the stock set up is sufficient for my needs.

Well, I have 3 places with in 15 miles of me that still rebuild them. Might try that route.

Get a rebuild kit for $22.

Google "Ford 1G Alternator Repair Kit"

Here's one: http://www.aspwholesale.com/index.ph...roduct_id=5164

You reckon putting that rebuild kit in will straighten out that supposedly rebuilt alternator?
It charges acceptably, but I would sure like to get rid of that screaming through the radio and have more than two listenable stations....

Oh my bad. Now I understand the issue...... do you have radio suppression plug wires???

Here is some info: http://www.onedirt.com/tech-stories/...lug-wires-101/

I'm assuming I do. I've been running this same radio for a few years now, never had a problem until I changed the alternator.
The radio is an am/fm stereo from a 1978 econoline, with a single dual voice coil speaker in the dash.
I'm gonna put a noise suppressing capacitor on the alternator after the truck cools off and see if I have any luck.

Part of the problem with the rebuilds is there is only so much you can do with a 30 or 40 year old core that has maybe been rebuilt several times already.

All new 60 or 70 amp is available in 1g case style from Tuff Stuff and Powermaster (Summit) but spendy.

Napa has much higher quality electronic parts ( alternators, starters, solenoids, etc) than I have found anywhere else. and they usually don't cost a whole lot more...

The first bad one I got was from napa, and that was the only one they had so I had to go next door to advance unfortunately...
I dug through all my radio repair stuff and found a capacitor that fit the bill. I then wired it between the alternator output and ground.
Alternator noise vanished and radio reception is great again. Theoretically it won't drain my battery....

There is a small internal noise suppressor inside the alternator on the rectifier bridge. It's just a small black box that slips over 2 terminals. I can see someone leaving that out. Ford used a external one at the regulator on the 65's but moved it inside in 66 I believe so they charge fine without but with noise.
