66 mercury M -250 300 I6 timing set question

Hello All,
I am tearing down a 66 300 I6 engine and when i pulled the timing cover i found a 92/46 fine toothed timing gears.

Can these gears be reused? If so what's the proper way to check them for excessive wear?
Thanks in advance for any help, Jon

Yes, they are reuseable. I believe the correct gear backlash is .002 - .006. The max cam end play is .006. I'm doing this from memory, but that is the right order of magnitude.

Thanks Frenchtown Flyer! Hoping after i pick up a cylinder ridge reamer and pull the crank i can figure out if this 66 had a forged of cast crank.
Thanks again for your time knowledge, Jon

1966 mercury 300 L6

Passengers side

Elderbrock 500 CFM
Offenhouser DP

Replacement timing gear to the right and stock set to the left.

Top 240 I6 head. I think ( removed from the 66).
Bottom 300 I6 head. I think (removed from a 1980 300).
