70 to 84 axle swap

i was looking at a 84 swb f150 4x4 i have out back.. i was wondering if anyone has tried to put the 4x4 front axles under a bumpside truck.. i didnt have a tape measure but it looks to me like i should be able to swap the axle assembly's as a easy way to build my 70 SWB into a 4x4.. has anyone done this yet

Might be easier to put the bump body on the 84 chassis.

It'll be going from a rear steer to a front steer. And what ya gonna do with the crossmember that will crash into the differential housing?

Prolly better to section the front frame off the 84 and graft it to your 70. Fishplate, box, and gusset as necessary. Remember it'll be a mix of metric and SAE hardware too.

orich yea i was going to use the np435 and transfer case from the 84.. i will just have to wait till i get a few projects done and out of the shop so i can have more room to drag the trucks in and do some measurements and thinking... i was just hoping someone may have already tried to do this and had some insight, before i started

As FE said, it is easier to put the 70 body on the 84 frame. The 70 has a 33 1/2" wide frame, and the 84 has at least a 37 1/2"+ wide frame so the radius arms would be very cramped and might not articulate well for the Dana 44 TTB axle. Easier to make body mounts than to re-engineer the Twin Traction beam axle. It is doable as I have seen a bump on a 80-98 F-250 chassis with a Dana 44/50 TTB axle here in Fairbanks.
