Broken Mirror

Broken Mirror
Driver's side mirror got hit and broken today. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is called and what years it can come off of in a junk yard? The bracket is not right and the whole thing needs to be replaced. The sun won't permit me to get the front side of that one mirror right now.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark... what do you mean by "the bracket is not right and the whole thing needs to be replaced"?
The reason I ask is because this is what I thought also after my mirror, of the same swing ONE way as yours, got hit.
After the hit, the mirror wouldn't stay adjusted properly. It seemed loose inside, as if something broke during the impact (which I did not witness).
A good friend gave me some replacements that swing both ways, so I began by taking my broken mirror off. As it turned out, the hit mirror was not broken after all. It was just a nut that got loosened. I tightened the nut, and the mirror now holds it's adjustement better than before the hit.
This not is not visible when you remove the mirrors, UNLESS you also remove the foam gasket. Once you remove the foam gasket, you will find a nut in the center of the mirror, that acts on a cam which applies pressure to two spring rods that keep the mirror in place. Tightened that nut, and the stiffness will be restored to the mirror.
Sure, I found that a couple of tiny little plastic tabs had broken off of the beauty trim cover of the mirror base, but upon examination, those taps ONLY retained the base trim cover, and had nothing to do with the all cast metal mirror substructure. The plastic tabs were inconsequential.
So, before giving up on your hit mirror, first remove it, then remove the foam, and see if you can fix it like I did by tightening that nut. It sure solved my loose mirror after it got hit.

Y2K, I'm listening. What happened with mine was I got sideswiped by a dump trailer in a construction zone and I couldn't move over any more to avoid the hit. He was traveling faster than me and pulled the mirror front a little and the glass came out of it and flew away. Now there is no glass (I don't know if that's replaceable) and the whole mirror moves a little more forward more than it should. Would that loose nut thing cover this? I did get him to stop and he offered to pay for it so I am in search of a proper fix, one genuine OEM from fleabay or Chuck's local yard is what I'm thinking.

pop the cover off the inside of the door directly behind the mirror. you will see two holes and a piece of black insulation tape. there is a third hole under the tape. the mirror is held onto the door with 3 10 mm nuts through the holes. my bet is one of the studs is broken.
if it is a manual mirror all you need to do is remove the 3 nuts. if it is a power mirror, you will need to also remove the door panel to access the plug on the power wires.

I am 99.9% sure it's 4 bolts that mount it to the door. I agree with above. Sounds like a great idea for the upgrade to the 08 mirrors. I didn't like the look of them on the older style trucks at first. But drove a truck with them installed and I love them. Much better view since the mirrors are larger. Plus the bottom and top mirrors are heated.
