column & shift linkage
I'm having an intermittent problem with my automatic column shifter. It will sometimes fall from "D" to a point in-between "D" & "2". This is on my 1970 F250 so it rides rough and seems to be jarring it occasionally out of "D". I'll notice it sometimes when the truck starts off from a dead stop in 2nd. I thought I was having other problems until I realized what was going on. Is there something in column or trans itself that would allow this? I"ve checked trans. vacuum modulator & kick down rod. They are getting good vacuum or or properly adjusted.

You should have to pull the shift lever towards you to go from "D" to "2". Just like pulling it out of "P". The transmission control selector position insert is what makes you pull the lever towards you. Over time and use this insert gets worn. So I am assuming yours is. Usually allowing a shift lever to come out of park more often than D to 2. 1969 from serial number D96,001 to 1971 is part number C9TZ7A216B. Discontinued. None on my 3 locators.

That's what I was afraid you'd say.
I have to pull it towards me to come out of Park and reverse but it moves freely between D 2 & 1.
I had it all apart a few years back to replace the shift collar. I saw some rubbing but wasn't sure how much was bad. I have a positive lock when it's in "P". I've been afraid of that dropping out of park thing. I just didn't remember if the D 2 & 1 section had positive stops on them. Thanks for the part number I'll do some searching. If you find a dealer with one I'd appreciate the tip.

Right lower: Look at the bottom of the column for the 7302 selector lever. Pic shows a bushing and insulator in it, but that's only for 1964/68.
1969/91's have a nylon bushing that snaps into the lever, when it cracks apart, will affect the shift lever position.

No, I'm sorry, I got my termonology mixed up.
I meant I'm going to keep a look out for the selector position insert you mentioned earlier. The next trip I take to the junkyard I'll disassemble a few columns and see how worn the inserts are.

Frickin' Cool Aby. Don't forget to lube the new one and the end of the shift lever. Don't ask me why I'm sayin' this.
