First, thanks again to everyone for creating a great forum where not only can you get great information, people are also welcoming and friendly about answering newbie's questions.

One thing I didn't anticipate when I bought the truck was the smell in the cab. A wonderful combination of oil, grease, old upholstery, rubber, etc

Reminds me of riding with my Dad in his old truck. He had a 1 ton International that I think was a '48. Still sifting family photos to try and find a picture of it to determine for sure. It had a couple of holes in the floor board, so you could watch the road going by.

It had almost the same 'aroma' although laced with a bit of his pipe tobacco.

Brings a smile to my face every time I open the door, not to mention it's just dang fun to drive.

The essence of oil, old sweat, cigar smoke, work boots, and wet dog is the aroma of old iron. An intoxicating mixture that only adds to the joy of the ride. Those who are able, might wear their favorite cap - extra points for a seed or tractor version - and are certain to smile like a goof while waving to all the admirers.

 

The cab of my truck smells like blowby and gas. I'm thinking about converting to a pcv and maybe eating less mexican food.

 

It's easier to just open the cowl vent and wing windows.

 

Definitely on the cowl vent. Unfortunately, my wing windows are very much stuck. One of these days I'll get around to fixing them.

 

So ... that's a cowl vent huh ? I thought it was the floor cleaner because every time I open it , all the grit on the floor blows into my eyes but my floor is clean.

 

Oh I miss my truck. You guys have to stop!

 

Wow! I too remember those smells and my first drive! A word of WARNING about that cowl vent when I first opened it driving down the road the dirt, rust, debris dam near sandblasted the retinas out of my eyes!! All part of the fun though!!!

Forget new car smell, love that old truck smell. My 56 tonner is of slightly different vintage than my high school 55 F100. Maybe it was the contact cement I used on the headliner?
Got a good cowel vent story, my Grandad had a real fine 51 GMC Deluxe cab. We were at a baseball game and my older brother (I was 4) was sitting on the hood with his little butt up against the vent and I got in the cab and reared (no pun intended) back on the vent lever, I just wanted him to move but I ended up pinching him good! Grandad thought it was funny but I got in trouble when we got home (it left a mark).

 

LOL, yes I got mine up to 45 MPH the other day and just about disappeared in a dust storm.

 

Ah yea, the self cleaning old truck. I made a road trip last weekend. Got the old truck out on the highway and made the mistake of opening the cowl vent all at once, at 80MPH.


They eyes are definitely a magnet to everything that was on the floor.....lol
