power steering pulley removal, 78 f 150
Hey guys, after looking on the archives is looks like you have to press the pulley off. Just how to you do that without wrecking it. I have the one with the plastic reservoir and I have another pump that appears the same (different brackets) but I can't get the attaching bolts out without running into the pulley.
Edit;
I just went back out and looked again....is there a special tool that attaches to the ring on the front of the pulley to get it off?
Any ideas?
Thanks Irv

Go to your area auto parts store, I like Oreilly's, and borrow a pulley puller kit. I got one a couple of months ago, and it was $45, but that's just a deposit, you get it all back when you return it within their time limit. One part of the kit pulls the pulley off, and the other part presses it on. Easy peasy.

Yep, O'Reilly's should have it in their "rental" tools.
The puller looks like this:
The two half-round pieces clamp around the lip on the pulley and the disc on the puller; the sleeve slips over them to keep them in place.
And the installer looks like this:
The small pilot thread at the end of this one threads into the inside of the shaft, and the bearing pushes against the front of the pulley.

Update on this project....Murphy was hard at work on this one!!!!! I got the pump back on and all hooked up....now there I got it....UHH nope. Started it up and went out the driveway and it was buzzing again. Popped the hood and there oil all over the return hose. New hose, fill it back up, wipe everything off, start it up, go back out and there's oil all over the return hose. Oh mercy!!!! Fill it up AGAIN, get the wife to do the start up and turn....and there's a pin hole in the new pressure hose I put on a month ago and it's aimed right at the return hose. You absolutely could not see it.... so another new hose and walla, it's done. Of course I have a lot less hair than I did!!
Oh, and there was nothing wrong with the old pump!
Thanks much,
Irv
