Questions about 2005 to 2008 trans modification

I have a 2005 Ford 6.0 CC 3/4T 4X4, 52,000 miles. I want to modify the transmission to use the 2008 oil pan and filter.

#1 When I do the exchange, how much transmission fluid should I need? No need to buy a bunch extra that I won't need.

#2 Do you just use the gasket to seal the new pan, use a silicone sealant without a gasket, or?

#3A When I put the new pan and filter on, I'd like to change to synthetic. What are most people using? I'm in Alaska and the truck will see -55F a couple of times a year. I will be pulling a 12,000# load behind it several times a year.

#3B In going to synthetic, I know I won't get all of the old ATF out. Should I take this modification to a tranny shop so they can flush it to get more of the old ATF out? Or, fill it with synthetic, run it a little and drain it again with another fill of synthetic, or?

Thanks for the help,
Bill

I just did it, replaced pan and installed new filter in pan (2008 style) and the inline filter on frame rail. It took 10 quarts fluid (I have an '04) . I used Valvoline Maxlife fluid, it is full synthetic and the truck shifts beautifully.

Pardon me for asking a stupid question but what is the advantage of going with the '08 pan?
Is it larger??

Also, where did you get it?

I'm always looking for ways to make my truck more dependable....

Larger and you get a real filter instead of a screen.

Mark Kovalsky where are you. I believe only Mercon SP or LV is the only approved fluid for the 6.0 diesel.

Mark has commented on the Maxlife a number of times, it is compatible with SP/LV -- FWIW Mine only took 9, 10 might be on the high side.

When you take the old one out and put it next to the new filter, you'll see why you are doing it. No comparison...

OP: You reuse the old gasket, no sealant needed or wanted. Be sure to get the neck seal out from the old filter -- it can get stuck up in there when you pull the old filter out...

What a terrific and cheap upgrade

This is the OP,

Thanks for the info. I've ordered three gal of Maxlife, I'll do the change in a couple of weeks.

The only question that someone brought up that wasn't answered was asking if the original Ford transmission fill was a synthetic product? I did call Valvoline to confirm their product wouldn't have any problem mixing with Ford's original fill so I'm good to go.

I don't think SP or its replacement LV are Full synthetic, likely a blend though... I put in LV and the trans has been happy, maybe I'll try the Maxlife on the next dump and fill...

Trackrig see TSB before doing the 08 upgrade requiring a front pump upgrade because of the temp.
