What are the odds that the fly wheel is ok and I just need to replace the starter? I can hear it engage the flywheel, it's making the zzzzzzzzzzz noise after it disengages the flywheel, can these starters be oiled or anything to prevent that noise?

Thanks,

Adam Dennis

With out actually hearing it, I'd say the bendix is sticking. You could disassemble, inspect and clean and lube and give it a try or just replace it depending on age and miles on it.

I'm pretty sure it's the original starter, auto zone sells them for 130 so I think I'll buy a new one, thanks for the reply.

Well, I put the new starter in and I'm getting the same thing, I wonder if the ignition could be bad causing it to spin longer than it should? that's why I hear the zzzzzzzzzzzzz sound?

Not knowing the sound, I have tho think it's the bendix not pulling the starter off the flywheel. What's the flywheel like, what's the voltage like from your batteries. Lacking voltage to pull it off.

from what I could see the fly wheel looks fine, sounds like the starter is spinning for a second or two after it cranks. just replaced the alternator, batteries with in the last 6 months. I'm seeing 13.45 to almost 14 volts..I can hear the starter engage the fly wheel before it cranks, then afterwards its like the gear is pulled back off the flywheel and free spinning for a second or two.. both starters sound identical.. it only makes the spinning sound after it is cranked..it starts fine, just makes the weird spinning noise for a second or two afterwards.

maybe a sticky ignition switch? just a little lazy returning to the run position.

that's what im beginning to think, the ignition switch has to be wiggled in order for the dinging to stop after I remove the key and try to exit the vehicle, so I know its not working correctly...
