PLEASE add you location to your profile

There should be no noise or play in the fan clutch. Prepare to pop $100 on a new one BEFORE it sticks you on the side of the road overheating ( depending where you are at !!! ) sooner than later. Don't forget to barrow the special wrench needed from where you buy it...

I would just run it until it seizes up and the serpentine belt breaks. A lot more will be broken that way so tons of new parts instead of just the one. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere is a small price to pay. Harley, any idea where he's located? I noticed he didn't finish his profile so his location isn't shown...

I just had to take apart everything to get to the fan clutch to repair the wires to it. Add your location so we can see if any of us are near you.

I agree with Harley though, it is time to put a new one in.

Well in response to my location: Clear Lake, Manitoba

I had looked into this a year ago and read that it was common for the fan clutch to jingle. It didnt seem imperitive to replace. Im sure that it is functioning properly and i've had no issues in the two years i've owned the truck. Basically, at idle it makes a jangly noise which is wuite annoying. Do folks recommend the mechanical clutch with adapter? Is it a good idea to change the water pump while in there? Is it necessary to remove the radiater before doing this job? Thanks for your advice

Hey Matthew, if you have an early Ex (with 6.8??), there are no wires to mess with. See my 'how-to' in the Excursion Tech sticky. Keep the radiator in. No need to do the water pump unless you really want to and need to flush anyway (still keep the radiator in). Wear gloves 'cause that fan has sharp edges! It's a 1,5hr job or 3hrs if you have some suds along the way.
