Mod over 390?
Alright guys so I have a tired 360 in my truck. I am running it as a hauler at the moment, but I would like to build a nice little daily driven sleeper out of it. Nothing too crazy, would like to keep the price of the motor under $3000. So I was looking into a couple of modular engines just for the added reliability over an old carbed engine. If I can make around 300hp/400 tq with a mod for around 3000 N/A, then that would be the route I'd take.
5.4 4v - I know Ford experimented with these but they were really limited run. Could I get a 2v 5.4 and put 4.6 4v heads from like a mark viii on the block?
4.6 4v - Could I get a mark viii and make the 4.6 put up the numbers I look for or is that a pipe dream?
5.4 2v - Can a 2v 5.4 run well? I know that my buddy had a 5.4 in his truck and it got destroyed by my bone stock 4.6 2v in a Lincoln towncar running on 7 cylinders. But it was a 97 and to my understanding that is the worst running 5.4 in the trucks.
I would like to stay away from the 4.6 2v just because my mother has a 4.6 in her 01 and it is a doggggggg.

If I had the money I would get a 4.6 2V stroker with TFS heads. The 2V has the most aftermarket options of headers, and intake manifolds. It uses a cable instead of dbw.
The other engines get to where the cost to play puts me into a reasonably built 4.6 2V with a turbo laying down bigger numbers. Of course unless you could score a wrecked engine with good life left, but now they are getting a bit rare with age.
The 5.4's stroke is really long, but shares the 4.6's bore size. Combined with small npi heads it gets chocked up easily where a 4.6 still has rpm left.
While the 4.6 2V is not a power house it does have the advantage of numbers on the market. Which is why I chose one for my F100 project. Too which I will add PI heads+cams, truck intake manifold, complete bolt-ons, and a proper tune. This should put me around 325/325 hp/tq. Then as time goes by I will seriously consider a TVS supercharger or smallish turbo. Either of which will get to the 500hp mark easily if not higher.
