2008 Superduty canbus questions

Against my better judgment I am going to install a Chinese head unit,, as they are the only aftermarket ones made to the ford OEM size.
Eonon D5173Z | Car DVD | Specific Car DVD | Car DVD for Ford-F150

Question: Does the 2008 F350 have all the "canbus" goodies?
In other words this radio apparently gets a lot of info from the canbus (lights, steering buttons, etc).
The F250-350 is not listed for this radio, but the 150, exped, etc is, the size is correct, should the canbus be the same between models ?

Thanks for any input.

King,
Ask Ford? I may drop by the dealer and ask a tech, they may know.
I was just curious (on a 2008 super duty) what info (if any) is available to the radio from the canbus connector

Ask the radio manufacture? obviously you have never bought a Chinese Head unit. If any reputable company made an OEM fit unit for ford trucks I would buy it, none do though. I have asked many questions of the "seller" of these units, the responses are comical
"We #1 seller, our radio is #1 device"

Doesn't it just take a double din unit and a bezel to install any head unit?

Have you checked this site? They are really knowledgable:

Cruiser,
thanks for the reply,
I really hate the look of the smaller Dbl Din with an adapter bezel.
The units made for the 2008 up ford that fit the opening look so much nicer.
I am just trying to figure out if the 2008 super duty has all the canbus info at the radio connector?
In particular where the steering wheel controls?

Gotcha. I think it would have to have the data there if you have the steering wheel controls. You should speak to the folks at crutchfield. In addition to the radios, they also sell all the harness adapters and such for installations. They may surprise you and have a recommendation for a head unit and adapter kit that you'll like.

You could go here and download the wiring diagrams.

Motorcraft Technical Resource

Along with that maybe the troubling shooting check list.
The cool thing is you can get a short term access to the
diagrams and workbooks and save it to you computer's hard drive.

Slack, I dont think the Chinese radio is going to have the can/bus hookup's. Def. check with Crutchfield they know everything about what your doing. You wont get any help from China, Yes work fine, please buy. Is all your gonna get, and that phone call will go to India where we out source all our telemarketing, much cheaper for them to do that. Ya gotta have the steering wheel controls. Good luck

Last time I bought a head unit from Crutchfield they looked up my VIN and threw in the plug adapters/harness I needed to make it plug and play for me at no extra charge.

Thanks for all the replys guys
I ordered The Ford 2008-2009 service manual DVD, so I should be able to see where the steering wheel audio controls go.
90% of the Chinese aftermarket head units have "key1" and "key 2" wires to sense the resistance from the steering wheel controls.
Question is does the 2008 ford have those wires run to the audio connectors, or is that info fed straight into canbus.
Most of the Chinese's units come with an external canbus decoder in the harness, that I believe grabs the canbus signal and then provides the key1 and key2 to the radio. One of the units looks like takes the canbus directly into the unit. So I need to find out if my 2008 provides SW controls and dimming info via canbus or individual wires.

I would gladly buy a name brand unit, if someone made a ford unit, not a double Din with an adapter plate (they look cheesy imo), But a standard full size (120mm x 190mm) ford unit like these Chinese units. A shame no good manufacture makes one, as they would fit 80% ford out there.

I will document when I do get one I=and install,

2008 has the signal wires. The radio doesn't interact with the CAN BUS much...

Thanks TexReb,
I see it has the analog wires from the SW buttons right to the connector, thanks for the picture, I had been looking for that for weeks

BTW, I know Don is long gone, but is the Chicken still kicking? Me and a buddy closed it down 42 nights in row back in the mid 80's, back when the drinking age was 18,, don't get me started

Most radio option now use networking to function. Unless you bought a stripped down model you likely will find the CAN network circuits in your radio connections. Identifying the stock radio will help confirm this. The wiring diagram posted above will help.

Also it only takes 2 wires to do it.
When you run with a protocol that runs over
twisted pair you can do a lot. Look at what the
phone company can do with it.
