I have seen window crank repair kits but I don't think I have seen any door handle shaft repair kits.
I don't think I have seen any new units available.
Anyone tore one down and took the wobble out of it?

Those are to cure sagging handles, but won't do a lot of good if the door handle shaft isn't square any more.

Bill, I have never seen any repair kits. Weld'n'grind should be easy.

I recently tore my door mechanism apart because it was very sloppy. When I did I was surprised to find that the door handle shafts had very little wear. I couldn't say the same for everything else though. The little cam with the square hole that the handle fits into was very worn as well as the pawl, the piece the pawl pushes, etc, etc, etc.
By adding material here and there by doing a bunch of small spot welds and then filing things back into shape I was able to take approx. 90% of the slop out of the mechanism.

I read your tech article yesterday but my problem is a wobbly handle pin. I haven't tore into one yet but I suspect there is a bushing in the housing that supports the shaft.
Since you have had one apart do you know?

Yea, we missed each other last time around. I do travel a lot for work.


There is no bushing that the square shaft goes through. It goes straight into that funky pawl shaped doo-dad with the square hole. That pawl piece with the square hole has a shoulder on it that fits into a corresponding hole.


I don't know much about the other end of the square shaft...the end that connects to the handle itself. I have a couple laying on the bench. I'll try to remember to have a look at them tomorrow.
