Ok so I have pulled the engine and tore it down. The rings were bad but the cylinder walls look good i didnt see any damage. the rods are the cast rods so im wanting to upgrade to forged and new pistons. what would you recommend me get. Also since i have the engine pulled and tore down should I do a new crank shaft and go ahead and bore it out. would decking the head be a good idea? I wasnt wanting to get new heads but could if it would be worth it. Also injecctors arent in the best shape. I am wanting some more hp but dont want to make it a really unrealiable truck. i run a garret 38r and ats stage 2 tranny. I realize you may need more info to answer my questions. im trying to learn as i go so just let me know what you think and what else would be helpful to know.
If it doesn't need bored, then don't. Clay at RiffRaff has a bunch of options for what you seek. I'm sure others do as well...Clay is just on the tip of the tongue.
You want to talk to your local machine shop and I would strongly suggest going .010" over. Even though the cylinders look good they will still be slightly oval and tapered. My best advice is give Clay at call at Riffraff Diesel, they do this all the time and can help you pick the best route to go.
tore down because it had alot of blow by multiple people said i needed to get into it and see what was wrong. then it just quit on me all together and would just crank. I assumed it had just finally lost compression but tearing it down i didnt see anything that would have caused that.
They don't make new anymore. The ones from Ford are reman. Riffraff used to have some but must have run out. You might try asking John Wood Automotive, I think they had some at one time.
Are you planning on going for big HP in the future? If not then the old rods should be just fine. Put your money elsewhere. I'm not an engine builder so some of you guys that do this on a regular basis jump in if I'm wrong but I thought forged was only needed if going big.
