7.3 idi died on road
I was driving home from ice fishing yesterday and my truck started surging and died on me three different times, each time i was just barely able to get it running again and it was running like **** everytime it started up again,
i got home and checked to make sure the fuel shutoff was working properly on my injector pump and i could hear it clicking each time i removed the power so i knew it was good.
So i hopped in and tried it again and lone behold she fired up and was running smooth again, i revved it up and let off it a couple times and it caught each time and seemed to be running fine
I left to work this morning and i didnt get to the first stop sign before it died on me again. I tried starting it and it would fire sometimes and run for a second then die again.
Couldnt get it running so i pushed it home and just got back now. I checked for fuel at the schrader valve and was getting an inconsistent flow of diesel, little bit would come out then some air bubbles then nothing and then a little more again.
I just installed a diesel rated mr gasket electric fuel pump 9 months ago and it was making alot more noise then usual while this was happening, almost like it was only pulling air or not pumping right or something.
Im thinking i might go to carquest today and just get a mechanical lift pump and go back to that route.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to try first?

I had just filled up tanks were full, i just pulled the hose off the end of my epump and pumped diesel into a water bottle for a min, the site says the pump pumps 2.2 litres a min so i timed it and it barely filled up the bottom of the 2 litre bottle i was using so im guessing the pumps shot

Is there a filter on the pump? Some e-pumps come with a prefilter and that could be clogged.
Otherwise I agree either the pump is shot, or the fuel line to the pump has issues.
Do you have a hand siphon of some sort that you could hook up instead of the pump to see if you can get fuel out of the tank?

^^^^^^^^^yeah.
The mr gasket pumps are designed to be just transfer pumps, and even then, they still suck. They could barely push diesel for my Jetta TDI, and they only lasted a few months. You need a duralft.

Ok thanks guys, i ordered in a facet duralift and it came in the next day! Ill get it installed as soon as i can. I tested the fuel line by blowing in the one end i could hear bubbles coming out in the tank, i could also hear air coming from the breather hose so i think ive got a good connection between the pump and pickup, i also already did the mod last summer so it should still be fine

if you installed a filter on the tank side of the pump to protect the pump from debries it should last.. if you did not it prolly sucked in a chunk of the showerhead into the valves of the pump..the same chunks that get stuck in the lift pumps and return line check valves, and cause the air intrusion night mare.
