Late '99 7.3L Diesel Tuner recommendation
OK, I have to start this thread...I just bougt my first diesel truck and will be towing a 7500# boat and am looking for recommendations on a tuner/gauges.
I am also interested in what the preferred modification is to increase the transmission cooling.
Thanks!

I've got a DP "F6" tuner and after a couple of years can't complain. It's on the fly tune change as well as its exhaust brake setting work really well for me pulling my 5th wheel in the Sierra's. The exhaust brake setting was what I really needed but the extra power is really handy plus the tranny shifts much tighter.

Oh yes, don't forget the gauges! With a tuner you may run somewhat hotter and you need to be aware of it with a pyrometer. And if pulling you should have a tranny temp gauge since I think the one on the dash won't warn you about a problem until it's too late. At least that's the way mine works on my 02. It's either cold or normal without much in between. I assume it's that way on overtemp as well, not much in between.

If you are going to chip it to tow absolutely get gauges, EGT & TRANS for sure, most also go for boost. Other opt for fuel pressure or some others on a three gauge set. Best upgrade for trans cooler is the 6.0 conversion. I also have the Derale thermostat with mine and it works well. You don't want the trans to run too cool either - ~180* is about the optimum.

A 6 position chip with an exhaust brake tune will be perfect. And like they said, you need egt and trans temp gauges for sure and I opted for boost as well. A ts 6 position chip is what I went for and I fully intend to get custom tunes on it (including an exhaust brake tune) as soon as money allows. If it's an auto you may want to invest in a shift kit too. 6.0 trans cooler will help trans Temps alot. Just remember with a tuner on it, you'll have to be mindful about the added engine load with a trailer on it and watch the Temps like a hawk. The added timing and fuel changes how fast you can temp it out pretty quick. The overdrive off button will become a very close friend haha
