Looking to buy '78 F-150, need opinion?

Interested in this truck, but wanted to get some input from those familiar with this year.

Here's a couple pics from under the hood. Body and interior look good.

Thanks!

Looks to be in pretty straight condition (without knowing if there is rust under new paint). Engine looks like it might be a Non Catalyst 351M or 400. You can't tell which is which by simply looking at it, but I see no air injector valve near the coil into the intake manifold. The power steering in this year is better than earlier years. Being non catalyst opens up more legal exhaust modifications assuming you live somewhere where this might be an issue.

Looks good. But, check out the cab corners, door bottoms, lower fender bottoms, wheel wells , back of box below the tail lights with a "refrigerator" magnet to see if bondo is there. As well as the floor and underneath the vehicle.

Looks pretty clean from the pictures. I love that deluxe two tone with the full race track trim. As stated, the most common places for rust on these trucks is the cab corners, bottom of the doors, above the rear wheels, and also the bottom corner of the bed below the tail lights. It appears to be a 4spd truck. Which would mean that it has a New Process 435 or a Borg Warner T18. Both are great transmissions with a granny low 1st gear and no over drive. The NP435 has slightly lower ratios which makes it a little better for towing. I would be sure to check which transfer case it has. It could have either a NP205 or NP203. The NP203 is an all time 4x4 unit and has chain driven internals. The NP205 is a part time 4x4 unit (can shift in and out of 4x4) and is an all gear driven unit. The NP205 is the more desirable of the two. Front axle should be a HP Dana 44 and the rear should be a Ford 9". Both are great axles. Also as stated, this truck has either a 351M or 400. Both engines are identical from the outside, so it's almost impossible to tell which engine it is just from looking at it. The main difference between the two is that the 400 has a 4" stroke while the 351 has a 3.5" stroke. Both share a 4" bore diameter. These motors are fairly gutless stock, but can be built to make very respectable power. All in all these are very reliable trucks that are easy to work on and also relatively easy and cheap to locate parts for. For the right price I would definitely pick that bad boy up.

Thanks for all the responses!

They are asking $7,995 for it. Odometer reads 98,622 (could be a roll over?). It's located in NY to buy, but originally from OR. So the body appears to be in good shape. Has minor rust, didn't see anything major. Definitely want to take a second look, especially looking close at the spots you guys mentioned. Listing also says locking front hubs, with after market tires.

What do you guys think on price?

Price sounds pretty high to me. Very clean trucks like that go for $5k tops in my area. Maybe your market is higher? I personally wouldnt pay much over $4k.

Seems kind of expensive to me. I just looked at a similar truck in WA that had a fresh repaint, perhaps not quite as nice, but close... $3900. Probably a good thing that the truck came from Oregon instead of NY. In Western WA, there are many places that don't put salt on the road during snow... or even have much snow at all. Oregon is just that much warmer to the south. if it came from Eastern Oregon.. dry and dessert like.

I definitely agree with you both. I was thinking more along the lines of 5k at most. Sounds like 4k is more in the ballpark. I think they are taking the OR thing to mean it's more valuable in a state like NY where the salt will eat your truck alive. Is it worth 3-4k more for that? I'm not so sure.... after I look it over again I will have a better idea of the overall shape of the body. Saw some rust on the edge of the driver's side door and on the rear bumper. Will probably have to shimmy underneath to see what's going on below.

I think I'll take another look and see if I can get the right price for it. Feeling more confident after you guys took a look under the hood. I have a few more questions to ask the seller now as well.

I've been looking for an older truck, that is reliable and relatively easy to work on. This one seems to fit the bill..

Appreciate the input... thanks for taking the time to respond!

F14= 4x4 pickup truck
S= 400-2V V8
R= San Jose assembly plant
F141= 6,150 GVW with 133" wheelbase
H2= 3.50 limited slip rear axle
G= Automatic transmission which would be a Ford C6 in this case.
