Additives for water pickup

What are the best additives for water elimination in the fuel? Have an Allmand backhoe with a Kubota 3 cyl. diesel engine. No start right now (10*), ice in the fuel filter (changed it). I use an anti-gell additive plus Diesel 911. Still water in the fuel. Cap is covered and plastic tank kept mostly full. Usually "over treat" with the additives. Any suggestions? Thanks

that is about the best you can do, besides knowing who delivers the fuel and making sure there is no water in it.

Thanks for the reply, Tom. Usually get the fuel 5 gallons at a time from one of 3 stations. Put additives in container before filling. Should check around and see where the diesel guys get their fuel from.

in 27 years of running diesels, i have only gotten one load of fuel with water in it, and that came from a station in Pennsylvania. it was not a lot, but enough to make the truck run bad and need to change the fuel filter.

Unlike a gas engine, a diesel can't deal with dispersed water. You want the water to drop out and then separate it before the pump.
If this is an ongoing issue with this machine, I would add a clear separator before the lift pump and drain as needed.

Not an ongoing issue - 2nd time in 4 years. Guess the additive wasn't doing its job. Plus my procrastination on replacing the fuel filter.
Water separator is a good idea. I'll look into adding one. Thanks

This is absolutely correct - you want to be using an additive that demulsifies (brings together) water. This allows the fuel water separators to do their jobs. Dispersing (emulsifying) water in can cause big problems for high pressure common rail systems due to their strict tolerances.

Have a great day!
