Timing guesswork on 5.4 WEP
The engine is out of a '99 Expedition for repairs and was dumped on the heads by one of those cheap three wheel stands. This engine has integral cam sprockets.
One cam sprocket shattered while the other survived.
On a junkyard dive, I got a replacement cam out of the same engine/model of vehicle that has the integral sprocket but the design is different. The original is solid, with only the holes for the cam tool. The replacement looks like a beam, having stress holes around the middle of the sprocket just beyond the cam tool holes.
On assembly I hopefully got the timing right as I have doubts about the marks being the same. I turned the crank by hand and felt/heard no interference.
Does anyone know about the sprocket design change and if the marks moved? I set the replacement (passenger side in vehicle) timing by the position of the lobes before aligning the marks as described in the repair manual.
Or have I wasted an afternoon by having mismatched cam sprocket designs?
No, this is not where the cam sensor is in the left bank forward of the sprocket.
