Depending how strong a radio signal you have (flat terrain, no big buildings, etc) you don't need much for modern radios. Mine works with nothing more than a plain old (insulated) wire stuck in the center of the antenna jack, run along the firewall over the glovebox. But I have excellent radio signal strength.

You could try many different areas but as mentioned, depends where you are driving and what objects/terrain there are around you. You can install them hidden behind the grill or bumper but you might get RF EMI and not get all of your channels.
You can also do the windshieild mounted newer style then route the wire some way to the radio. It would mount behind the mirror and be fairly hidden (less visible than a body antenna)

My DD has an antenna built into the windshield and uses a signal booster as from the factory. Not needed in my area but it is designed to maintain signal strength in the mountains or where blocked by mountains/buildings/etc.
Rather than install on the windshield, I'd install one of the tape-on antennae onto the rear glass. Not like you can see much out of it anyway.
