What is the best way to test your injectors?

My 05 F250 (187k miles)runs much rougher upon startup than any of the other 6.0s that I have owned. Otherwise it runs fairly decent. I am thinking that an injector or two is going bad. Any thoughts?

Do I need to take it to the dealer or is there another way?

Short answer, Ford IDS is the best way.

AE sort of works ok.

Might use a quality scanner and see if a pending contribution code exists

Thanks, I will take it in shortly. They want it overnight and they mentioned that it is best to test them on the coldest mornings (here in MN) for the best results.

A cold start would be looking at stiction and the integrity of the spool valves.

At operating temp it would be looking at the overall integrity of the injector including the plunger, intensifier etc.

Of the 2 I believe injector health @ operating temps is far more important. Stiction is easily remedied thru various ways. A bad injector at 190 ECT isn't easily fixed.

There is 2 tests that I do.

One is I run pyro's in each manifold. If you get a large delta you have an injector issue.

The 2nd is the 1800rpm test in park/neutral. If your truck shakes and you can't hold this rpm than you probably have an injector issue.

Next step would be IDS to figure out which injector.

I did this check, truck shook and missed pretty bad and couldn't hold 1800 rpm. Took it to the ford dealer and they found 2 injectors that needed to be replaced. Once I replaced them re-did the 1800 rpm check and the needle didn't move.

Nope Best I can figure out is it does the same tests as IDS does without the IDS.
So far I have not found a price on them or anyone local carries them.
They list Autozone;advance and oreillies as resellers but a call to all three here never heard of them or find them listed in their data base.

Wow but I kinda figured that. A little bit more and you can get the actual rotunda IDS and be able to check everything ford makes and everything checkable. Not just injectors.

If it is a Stiction problem, check out our Stiction Eliminator to clean up the spool valves

I have one, it works great you can read actual Milli-seconds of spool valve delay. With this tool you can pick out the problem injector(s) and make a 6.0 start and run perfect. I've probably used it on quite a few trucks so far, and with excellent results. To use it you have to unplug the FICM and connect the tool to the FICM them connect the FICM harness to it, so it is connected in series, so a little bit of a PITA.
