4 low

seems like most of the time I have to coast the truck a little to free it up.

manual shifting transfer cases are usually a little harder. Always have been for me.

You could try to back up a bit if it wont let you move the lever.

I've noticed that manual shift transfer case comes out of 4lo much easier, or at all, when rolling a little bit. Same for engagement. If you have manual hubs I think you can unlock them to be in 2wd low of you need to get to somewhere to disengage. This assumes you don't need 4wd at that moment.

I've always found it easier if you have the truck very slightly rolling either forward or backwards while the transmission was in neutral, then "stab" the transfer case shifter quickly in the position you want. Always worked like a charm on my old Dodge.
