What is the BEST high heat (under the hood) electrical tape?

Like the thread title says, I'm looking for the best high heat, LONG LASTING tape to use under the hood. I'm having problems finding a tape that doesn't suffer from the adhesive turning to slimy goo and the tape comes lose over time. Proven poor tape choices have included:

*Common vinyl electrical tape from Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

*3M Friction tape - black
3M 3/4 in. x 20 ft. Friction Tape - Black-3407NA-BA-6 - The Home Depot

*Scotch Super 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape
Scotch Super 33+ 3/4 in. x 66 ft. Electrical Tape-6132-BA-10 - The Home Depot

What brand and series/model is "the good stuff"? Good stuff means, what Ford uses, the stuff that lasts and lasts. Thanks!

In my experience, the Ford stuff doesn't last either. But it may last longer than the others. You may want to try rubber tape. It doesn't have glue. You stretch it and wrap it, make sure you wrap half of it on itself, or if you are wrapping the end of one of those plastic looms, wrap it at least twice. It sticks to itself and over time becomes one piece. You have to cut it off.

Lowe's sells it also. It comes in a small roll, it's very stretchy and seals out water very well.

Thank you, I will give that a try. I have noticed that the material used by Ford is not "perfect" either, this is even more true if yo like to wash the engine bay a few times a year. I've also noticed that up high, where the heat is the greatest, that something along the lines of what you noted is used; as I cut some off last night it also looks like there could be some fiber in it. Wondering if this is a glass fiber.

You can use either a dry vinyl loom tape and replicate the Ford wiring harnesses which is a good method for the most part. 3M also sells a self-fusing insulating tape but that's a bit of overkill for what I think you're trying to accomplish.

The dry vinyl tape is basically what we call electrical tape but without any adhesive. I've used it creating my own custom wiring harnesses, learned how Ford does it by tearing apart OEM harnesses.

Honestly using a high pressure power washer under the hood isn't generally advisable since those can push water into sensitive places like connector housings etc.

If heat is affecting any of your electrical wiring its better to re-route it away from the heat source if at possible. There are numerous wire loom products designed for higher heat environments, maybe check racing specialty shops like Jeg's or Summit Racing. Mouser would be a good place to look as well.

Thanks for the info. The wiring being taped is in it's OEM location; of all the wiring it's for the TPS and it's up high, in front and behind the fan shroud.
