time to harness 'er up

so the motor for my project is starting to come together, but the wiring harness is a bit of a mess .. still functional (when I pulled it), but I'd like to 'clean' it up ..

can I use standard electrical tape to re-wrap the corrugated tubing?

any ideas on cleaning and fixing up the frayed ends of the cloth heat shielding?

Looks nice. Blue for Ford.

Heat shield - I don't know how to make it neat other than replacement.

Electrical tape - Don't use standard adhesive backed electrical tape. It will become gooey over time. Use a product called FRICTION TAPE. It is black and looks like electrical tape. There are many brands. It's available everywhere. It sticks to itself. You might waste a couple of feet learning how to use it. That's what is on the original harness loom.

thanks, it's OEM color (dark ford blue) ceramic from Duplicolor, wife suggested red, had to explain that red is for ch*vy, she still didn't get the whole painting the motor thing

where can I find replacement heat shield cloth .. and how do I get it over the connectors .. any alternatives?

off to the local hardware store for the friction tape .. PO used a bunch of electrical tape and I think that's why you can't even handle the harness without getting all gummed-up .. wish it came in colors though ..

For the heat shield try summit or PAW

Summit
Heat Protection - SummitRacing.com
PAW
https://secure.pawengineparts.com/sh...cfm?catid=1354

Or there is always the original Ford part. I can dig up a number for an '89 302, NumberDummy can get any number for anything!

so I looked at the build trucks orig engine harness and it had none of the heat shield or corrugated covering .. albeit it was a much simpler harness, just the injector wires, and it was just 'taped up' .. not sure, but may not be 'factory' ..

the donor engine harness (swapping it in w/ the motor it came with) has a lot more wires incorporated, along with the 'guides' that are attached to the valve covers, and is covered w/ the corrugated tubing and cloth heat shield on the individual 'take offs' to all (well, most) of the connectors ..

anybody have any idea what the temp rating of the cloth shield is, or is it more to keep the actual wires from touching anything hot (even the cloth shield that's in good condition stops short of the connectors) ..

what ACTUAL temps am I trying to protect from (the friction tape is rated 80*C/176*F)?

can I just loose the cloth shield and wrap everything with the friction tape? or is the 'air gap' whats important ..

Pete,

When I rewired my fuel injectors, I slid the heat shield as far down as possible. Only the wire and injectors were outside the heat jacket.

I don't know what to say about heat protection under the hood. The new wire I used for my injector harness was standard stranded automotive wire from summit. If you are worried buy heat shielding.

p.s. Practice a bit with friction tape before you depend on it. I always run two or three overlaps at each end.

Good luck,

yeah, that's what mine look like, so I guess the short length of wire within an inch or so of the injector, which is unlikely to come into contact with anything, is OK for the heat involved ..

not really worried, just would rather get it done right this time, as I don't wanna have to go back and re-do things once it's all back in the truck ..

I remember the stuff now (friction tape), actually used to use it on the ol' hockey stick (+20yrs ago) .. did a quality job then, so I should be good to go .. (maybe a little practice, it has been +20yrs LOL)

Good luck,
thanks for the input ..

was still searching for something to match the paint job and found 'self fusing silicone tape' (also known as 'rescue tape').. actually had some in black in the garage and tried it out, will definitely do the job .. it comes in colors, is rated to 500*F, and is fuel and oil resistant (among other things) .. I ordered some in blue and will post pics of the results when I'm done ..
