The one that got away...
I was going through the file cabinet looking for something important and came across a couple of pictures that got me thinking... I wonder if people would have a good story and maybe a picture of the one that got away. You know, that truck that you had and for one reason or another you parted ways with.
Maybe this is just me being nostalgic about about vehicles that have come and gone. Anyway, if you have got a story lets hear it!
I will start:
This is what my wife and I were driving when we got married. The ford was mine of course.
The chevy was pretty sweet, at least I still have the driver!
The ford was my first pickup. I bought it in high school and made payments on it through most of college. It was a 1979 f350 4x4 camper special, with factory AC, cruise, dual tanks and a nice 460 with the c6. It was clean as a whistle and rust free. It had been very well cared for before I got it and I did my best to keep it that way. I babied it. Life rolled along and soon I had three kids that wouldn't fit in a single cab. I also lived in a pretty remote area where most any use I had for it meant at least a 100 mile round trip. Pretty pricey with that 460. The final straw came when I got a brand new company truck that would do everything the old ford would do. So I sold it. The worst part of selling it though was seeing it two weeks later with a home made six inch lift and 37" hummer tires. It showed up at the local mud bogg event complete with a Bigfoot style dual chrome pipe roll bar and a rebel flag stuck in my gooseneck hitch. I about cried.
The chevy was another story. About the same time as the ford went down the road the chevy did to. It was a 1972 k20 350/350 truck. Very simple but exceptionally nice shape. It made it about a year and ended in a very bad multiple barrel roll wreck. Luckily no one was hurt, but the truck didn't fair so well. Not a single panel made it out, the front axel was 50' from the truck, the transmission and transfercase were in several pieces and the motor was on fire.
I guess you can't keep them all... But if I could these two would be keepers!

Mine would have to be the first '51 F-1 that I restored. I bought it without an engine, swapped one in and drove it around for a few years. Then decided to restore it, but was young and had very little money. It wasn't perfect, but still a nice truck and fun to drive.
How much I sold it for in '85 makes me cry now
It sits in a museum now, I go visit it once in a while.....

Scott, that is very cool! You have to be proud that your work is in a museum.
I need to see if I can find any pictures of my first car a 1977 Ford Maverick 4 door. It had a straight 6 in it. If I would floor it, it would bog down for a second or two before it started taking off. It also burned a quart of oil every 350 miles. I loved that car. My mom didn't like me driving it from Central Missouri to Lincoln Nebraska after a while. But I got my moms 1983 Nissan/Datsun Sentra wagon. I loved that car too until it finally died in 2003. It was a tin can though.

I'm lucky, I guess, all of my cars were beaters with most of their lives used up so even though as a kid I felt.bad when I had let them, usually to the local scrapyard, I don't really have one I'd want back. My F-2 has been in the family since the late.'60s and it will still be in it when I pass. The panel is a more recent acquisition but it'll probably stay around for long time. I tend to like to hold onto my toys for long time.

I had a 60 Austin Healy I put a built up Ford 289 into. The engine had a 310 duration can 10.5 to 1 forged pistons solid lifters a holly 4 barrel (I think a 1100 cfm) ported exhaust with headers an 11 qtr oil pan and echlin gold tipped ignition If I popped it it first I would blow the wires off the wire wheels. It could still smoke the tires doing 60 in forth if you floored it. My wife (then girl friend) loved it as she could wash her very long hair we would take off in the car and 10 minutes later the hair would be dry. The car is gone but the engine lives in a pickup in River Forest Il.

I have bought and sold a lot of cars but I don't want any of them back. I sold my 39 sedan on Monday. I simply don't have time to keep all of them up and it makes me sad and angry to watch a nice car deteriorate. Now I have a little bit more space and a bit more cash to use fixing my 53 sedan. At my peak, counting cars, parts cars, and the tractor, I had 14. I'm down to 6 now. I don't want any of the ones I sold back. I want to keep the ones that make me happy. I want to own my stuff, not have my stuff own me.
Skalywag I don't blame you a bit for selling that Corvette. If you weren't having fun with it, let someone else have a turn.

My first car, at 16, was a '56 Chevy convertible that I got for $250. Yellow and Black with a 265 4bbl that had been converted from a powerglide to a 3 speed on the floor. I drove it for a year and traded it for a '56 two door wagon (not a Nomad) that I had for less than a year. I would like to have either on back since they are both worth a lot of money these days. After those I went to Fords - a 62 Falcon, then a 64 Falcon, (both of which I tore up) and then a beautiful yellow 56 two door post Fairlane with a 312 and a 4 speed that had been hot rodded. I didn't get to keep that one long as I got a bunch of tickets and it was taken away. All those in high school, not sure what my parents were thinking...

I had a 1956 IHC S120 4wd. Over-estimated the strength of the Dana 44 front-end when I was fifteen. Sold the remains a couple of years later. Wish I still had it. Ditto for my 1960 F100 4wd. It had a 223, 3 speed, and the usual rust for that style. It spun a rod, and I later sold the transfer case out of it.

In between these cars bought in 74 and 78 I bought my Ford truck in '77. So I had 3 mid fifty vehicles. I got a teaching job in 1979, moved away from home and found I couldn't afford all these cars. I sold the 57 as it would soon need body work. I sold the 55 in 1984 to buy an engagement ring. I miss both cars but I still have the girl and my Ford truck!
