F-250 Best engine

What is the best engine for an F-250 2 wd that will be used for only occasional heavy loads?

I want an F-250, somewhere between 68-79 and hope to put a slide-in dump bed on it, for gravel, barkdust etc.

I want something that gets better mileage than the 4.9L 6 cyl that's in my 83 F-150 (10 mpg city) and hauls a bigger payload.

I don't like the 80's Fords that much, so I'm looking for either 68-79, or 99 and up.

I'll drive it, when not using my V-10 (8 mpg city) van.

Having to pull the dash to replace instrument lights really passes me of, in my '83. I'd rather switch, than fight.

My '71 F-100 has a 351W. It's a really easy swap - same bellhousing pattern, perches, and motor mounts as a 302. The longer stroke helps torque and mileage isn't terrible.

Hmmm... if ya don't like 10 mpg get a 2004 or newer Powerstroke but a 300 in a Bump or Dent F250 is decent but a slide-in dump will tax it even more being that it is carried onboard more often than not.

Your current 300 should get more than 10 MPG. Check your driving style.

I haven't driven it for a few years but it seems like 13 or so MPG.

F-250 with a dump body isn't gonna get better than about 12. Get a 7.3 or 6.0 super duty if you want better than that.
