OT: Winter storm emergency

Just talked to my brother, he lives in a Buffalo NY suburb. The Governor has declared a winter storm emergency for the area and activated the National Guard. Travel is illegal today and tomorrow for much of Buffalo and surrounding area. Kevin says the snow in his yard is above his waist (he's 6'4"!) and still coming down hard with frequent whiteouts. It's supposed to continue into tomorrow.

I understood the snow was falling at about 4 inches per hour. Yikes!

I'm "lucky" enough to be right in the middle of the snow belt. We have at least four feet of snow and some serious drifts. No sign of letting up so far but we have a nice fire in the fireplace, I just cracked open a cold beer, and every couple of hours I've been clearing out the snow in front of the back door, front door, and both garage entrances. Could be worse!

Here's a picture of an SUV today.

The latest forecast is for 8-9 FEET south of the city by tomorrow!!!!
I decided to move out of Buffalo after going thru the blizzard of 1977, 14 FEET in that one. Locked the city down for almost 10 days. This is going to be another massive storm.

This what a lake effect snow storm looks like from above:

The lake is to the right. 1/2 the city is getting covered. There is thunder and lightning!

Awesome picture!

This one is missing us (south of Oswego) but I'm sure we will get ours. Stay warm, stay safe, it will pass.

Wow.. Tomorrow's junk mail day isn't it? Might be a little late..

Buffalo has been the National Snow Repository for as long as I can remember.

Good News, you don't have to cut the grass this week.

Hope everyone just has the fun part of a snow storm and not any problems. I would hate to guess the weight of that much snow on garage and house roofs. Stay safe

I think the snow and cold was the reason my brother bought a place in Florida.
Think I'll go to Virginia tomorrow.

I was going to mention that - getting it off the roof (safely) is important.

Also, elderly neighbors and folks living alone sure could use a visit or checkup to make sure they are OK. The anxiety factor goes way up in seniors even with simple things, and five feet of snow ain't simple. Help 'em out if ya can.

Brings back memories of ....“Stay inside, grab a six-pack and watch a good football game,” as Mayor Jimmy Griffin was famous for saying during the blizzard of '77.
Oh yes, those are the sights I DON"T miss!
