4x4 not engaging

Looking at another Ex but the owner says the transfer case does not engage. Says it can be locked into 4X4 by crawling under it and engaging it manually by removing a motor [Servo motor ?] Does this mean I would need a new transfer case or just the servo motor ? I know mine did the same thing last winter. It would go into 4X4 and then pop out. Any help would be great.
Thanks Dave

There are two relays under the hood on the drivers side that work to engage and disengage the 4WD. I've had to replace both of mine. It's a quick and easy check, try swapping them as a test before you buy a replacement.

Dang... mine worked fine when I checked out about a month ago. Now we have snow & cold and the hubs won't lock up and I can hear the tone of the defroster change when I turn the 4x4 ****.

Hopefully it's just the vacuum lines to the hubs, I have replacements to put on already... but I hate having stuff that doesn't work reliably.

I'd bet on a leaky PVH solenoid first.

It could be.

I tested it in the spring when I thought the hubs were too slow to engage and everything seemed OK... held vacuum and "clicked" when either pin was grounded on the connector; so I dismissed that.

Should've just replaced it then I suppose... but I ordered one now.

Warmed up a few degrees and now it works fine... in/out in about 15 seconds & 15 feet. Ugh!

I'll replace the vacuum hoses & PVH solenoid anyway... it's gonna get colder again.

I installed Warn hubs, put pipe plugs where the vacuum lines pushed on the hub, and completely removed all the vacuum lines. Where we live in Wisconsin, the hubs are usually locked from Nov to March.

Well that was the easiest 2 minute repair ever. The new PVH solenoid seems to have fixed it... the hubs lock almost immediately now.

Thanks for the advice! I had looked at the PVH before and it appeared to work but it was warm out then.
